Current leanings;

Genelec 8330A

KEF LS50W

The Genelec has its own excellent DSP setup. The rear ported KEF I would have to EQ by ear, but they are coaxial and have a lot of tech built in.

Not sure what else I should put on short list. There is a chance I could listen the these two, many others have no hope.

Don't forget the Kii3's ! (Powerball pending): https://audiophilestyle.com/forums/topic/61064-kef-ls50-wireless-ii/

One brand that's not been mentioned in this thread that demands some respect is Barefoot Sound.

https://barefootsound.com

It's safe to say a lot of the music you've heard in the past decade has been mixed on Barefoots.  I've got a pair of Micromains on stands in my home studio and love them to freaking bits.  I've had mine since 2011 and have no urge to replace them with anything else.

Likely outside your investment ballpark, but their entry level Footprints might be worth an audition if you can find someone local who stocks them.

Lew at Awave / Chocolate Audio in Melbourne is the distributor. Hit him up and find out who might have some near where you live.

They are big. Heavy. And reeeeeal close to my head. And it's good.

Just using Optical in at the moment as its what I have. Might make a Digital Coax cable and use that, see how it goes.

Makin me miss the passive LS50's I had at my desk !

Lots of monitor type speakers mentioned in this thread.

Does anyone know if certain types of monitor speakers are decent for mid field recreational listening? I notice the OP went for more general hifi speakers for his desk but I am wondering the applicability of some monitors for non-close-field duties.

Revival.

So I've had the LS50W II for about 8 months now.

I really enjoy their sound. It's not a monitoring speaker, it's a hifi speaker.

My only real gripe is the remote control aspect, and how not much point using a DAC.

Entertaining idea of changing to some actives with XLR input. But only if they'll be just as good

Budget would be up to 3k.

Upstream gear is solid, Chord Qutest and SparkoS Aries (excellent preamp).

Might even try a less mainstream store here in Brisbane. At least for the Genelecs. Good idea!

These may tick all the boxes. I had the older generation these are based on, fabulous speakers that went to a good mate.

I run their passive version mid fields, everything they make is very good.

Take no notice of me but anyone given thought to something from the Airpulse range if your after something nice in a powered monitor, Phil Jones can't be that bad if they use his gear at Abby Rd. Not the same level as some gear but thought worth throwing out there.

I would mate but just too big for the desk. ONLY thing holding me back.
