Speaker choice ... views much appreciated

Recommended Posts

Im at a point now where I need to make a call on some "nice" speakers.

Amp:  Rogue Audio Cronus Magnum 3, tube integrated amp

TT : VPI Scout 2

CD player : Cyrus CD8x & PSX power source

So, choice of speakers. Not planning to spend more than $3K. Ive been looking at the Magnepan .7 ... Seems like a good match to the Amp, but happy to receive any thoughts. Ive been a bit out of touch for a long while so the above are recent purchases.

Thanks

If you have listened to the Magnepan .7 and like what you hear, suggest you go with them.  Speakers are often a personal choice and ideally should be auditioned.

Speakers really require auditioning as they can vary quite a bit and some people will like and  others dislike the same speaker. Spend some time trying to listen to speakers in your price range and find your short list.

@frednork i couldn't agree more. Speakers preference are really subjective. Just like people's various taste on music.

@Glarkcable hey Michael, Maggies are one of my favourites. They are known for their transparent sound. Some people reckon that Maggies lack of bass etc. Placement of these speaker are tricky (hates side walls etc) and speaker impedance can drop quite low depending on music. So pairing with the right amplifier is important. I used to have full range Apogees speakers, love them but amplifier is a headache need Krell to drives these ribbons..  Unfortunately, there isn't any short cut when it comes to choosing the right speaker. Audition audition and auditions.  If you could get dealer which allow you to bring speaker home and audition in your home environment (room acoustic) , connecting to your existing equipment. That's the best thing. If you cant find dealer who is willing to do that. Let me know I can recommend you..

Thanks pauloch7, Appreciate the comments and yes, there is so much hit and miss stories around Maggies, home listening appears the best assurance. Cheers

Maggie’s are worthwhile if a good sonic match.

Your amp seems to retail around $5k so the new speaker budget may need match it as $3k gets you less speaker options.

Thanks for the thoughts, thats a great perspective... Yes, was also thinking that, then Id need to go to a 1.7 which will probably provide a better base (?) performance capability. Couple problems, my much better half has been very supportive of my selections to date , so I tread carefully as the Maggie 1.7 starts to get quite large in "our" lounge and then there's the budget of course 🙄. Ive heard a few Maggies (LRS... .7... ) and impressed. There is so much knowledge on this forum that Ive been hoping someone has matched a Rogue Audio tube with a "good" conventional speaker that may have some views. Anyway, Im amazed at how good mY AR93 is performing with the Amp and CD8x, Im sure its working at its limits. Cheers

Let me add to the majority opinion here:

Speakers (and room) are by far the most influential in the overall characteristic of the sound—and are therefore a 'must' to audition. Also do that audition in your own room (of course providing you plan on keeping that room😀). If that's not possible look for a "return if not suitable" arrangement with the seller.

A 'sort-of' rule of thumb--quality starts at the source (and once lost cannot be regained); character starts at the room/speaker interface.

Thanks for the note, happened to be off the site for a while. Just noticed your thoughts on this. I invested in Maggies 1.7i. Great purchase from Bill Maclean. Still tuning it, seems to improve the sound very time I tweak. Awesome sound for vocals, classics, vinyl and good quality lay back music. Cheers

Congratulations on the purchase. What do you think of the bass so far? They will take some time to stretch their legs :)
