Hi muon,

I see Centre Com has a big sale at the moment.    If you have time can you look at the home PC pre builds for simple non gaming use and let me know if anything is good buying please.

$1200 to $1700 range.   No screen required.   Need cd burner.

Regards Cazzesman.

What are your needs, what do you do with it.

This is just a quick build one where they do it, as I'm too picky for the pre built ones they list. Note...have added 3x SilverStone FN123 120mm Case Fans, Slim Profile of 15mm Thickness. case comes with 2x 12cm fans so why not cover the other three positions ?

Could go do a larger case and a bigger motherboard with more features.......shrug.....I focused on a nice compact case and a good power supply.

For a wireless adapter get a Edimax AC600 USB one from umart for 35 bucks.

Edit: you will notice I came under your minimum, that's because I hate spending other peoples money like this :$

Could go for a better motherboard, an 8 core CPU and larger case ect' if you wanted to max out that budget.

These are links to each part

Case. It's fancy

Low end graphics card because that all that is needed

This is the USB wireless adapter I suggested from umart, I have one and they are good, good signal strength and plug n play with Win 10 so no need to use the driver cd.

Yes that 3600 CPU is of course a better choice, go with that.

Or of course you could go for more cores with the Ryzen 7 2700X which has 8 cores and 16 threads and a max boost frequency of 4.3gHz.

I don't think there was a huge leap in performance between the 2000 series and the 3000 series, definitely not like the leap you get going to the 5000 series.

Edit: There would be comparisons and most involving video editing benchmarks.

Keep in mind that with the R5 3600 a bios update is needed in all chip sets before the 570X, but seeing as you will be getting them to do the build that should be OK. It does dissipate less heat than the 2700X I suggested before if that site is accurate, the 2700X puts out 105w TDP compared to the 3600's 65w you chose.

It might be that video cards are utilized in number crunching duties like with video editing these days, it was all the CPU in the old days more than 10 years ago but applications can now take advantage of GPU's for number crunching work.

No, it turns out the majority (da Vinci Resolve aside) still use CPU for all the extraction of the video, minus some key effects like slides/dissolves and so on.

Counter-intuitive I know, but true. This is born out by my recent experience (I just didn't realise it).

Thanks for that :thumb:I have found it a bit confusing these days.

I guess it will always depend on the given application and how it handles the work load.

I got mine down to $1000, using my current video card (the bulk of the processing for videos is done on the CPU anyway).

If they were in stock and I updated the Ryzen to the 3600XT, it would only add $100 or so.

Damn, that Samsung 970 Evo 500GB looks like a really nice price.

I would suggest one could do better on the ram for $10 more - Kingston HyperX Fury 16GB (8GBx2) 3200MHz DDR4 Desktop RAM Black $109.

Motherboard choices depend heavily on feature sets - make sure it has all you needs

I took yours', and adapated it to my own needs, and then posted that above.

Just for discussion.

So your focus is on vid editing?

Then go for a 5000 series Ryzen

Maybe up ram to 32Gb too, while It's cheaper.

Only have two slots in that board, but probably better with a 570X board if going to a 5000 series CPU anyway, and if the board is larger the case might be too small........................it never ends ;)

32MB RAM is probably overkill, as is an internal 1TB drive.

I have external storage through portable 1TB SSDs already, and the RAM is unlikely to be full utilised in my entry-mid level software suite.

This isn't commercial grade video editing.

I don't get paid.  ?

l always recomend filling up ram, a hangup from the old days of 286's when ram and hard disks with real expensive.

To get the best performance we had to create a Ramdisk

Ram and hard drives are really cheap these days.

Found the receipt for my first PC the other day $2400.

386 at 33mghz  2 meg ram 40meg hard drive 3.5 and 5.25 floppy drives and Dos 5 with MS Works.

regards Bruce

Hi @minute

I think I've done it. Here is a screenshot when I ran Ryzen Master with my D.O.C.P. setting. The memory clock speed, fabric speed, and sub timings all seem to match the target profile. Can I take this to mean my overclock is successful? So far after a full day of use we observed no signs of instability so that is reassuring. We will increase the load over the week and see how it goes.

Hi all,

I'm in the market for a new desktop. Haven't bought a new one in > 10 years.

I found a site called 'Make My PC' > https://makemypc.com.au/

Anybody used them? Are they worthwhile?

Strange they only have a choice of the Pro version of Windows 10, most users only need the home version.

In fact the process limits choice on all components, and seems to be a little up in price compared to what you can get stuff for.

For instance in the choice for CPU going desktop, they have a Ryzen 3 or Ryzen 5 in the list, but they do not state what models!

So impossible to know if you are getting value or not.

They charge $299 for Windows Pro, at Umart you get the same OEM Windows 10 Pro for $199.

I would stay away!
