Subwoofer for my 4 speakers?

Recommended Posts

Hi all, would like your advice.

I got 2 pairs of speakers in my 4.5m x 5.5m private gym (with lots of equipment/machines in it):

and

https://www.ta-hifi.de/en/loudspeakers/criterion-ctl/ (but mine were bought in 1992....).

I love the 2 pairs instead of 1 as I'm moving around a lot inside the gym and it makes the sound come from 'everywhere'.

Is it worth it to add a powered subwoofer to it? Love my 1200W/12" Velodyne subwoofer in my lounge but don't really want to spend that much money for my gym.

Happy to buy a 2nd hand subwoofer though, something around the $500 mark.

What should the minimal wattage be? E.g. would a 300W 8" one be enough to accompany those 4 big speakers? It's for music only, i.e. no movies/DVDs.

Thanks in advance for answers and possible 2nd hand subwoofer finds!

Yes... but it's impossible to generalise on watts.

What it depends on is how loud you want it to play.    The louder you want it to go, the more likely you are to need a larger (in physical size, not watts) subwoofer.

Counter-intuatively, it is sometimes/often true that the larger the subwoofer that the less power you need to play the equivalent loud.
