Seeking AV Processor.

Recommended Posts

Howdy folks,

I'm in the market for an AVP and due to a couple of factors, pickings are slim.  My #1 choice is a Marantz AV7705, but it appears that there's none in the country.  This is now a superseded model, and its replacement, the 7706 isn't due in Oz until Jan. 2021, but in very limited numbers.  This is causing me to broaden my search.  I'd go an EC second hand Marantz 8802A, or 8805 (if the price were right, but is highly unlikely anyone would sell just yet).  I haven't looked closely at other brands, thus the reason for this thread.

What I'm seeking -

  • Independent dual sub correction, as opposed to parallel;
  • ATMOS;
  • HDCP 2.2.

I can get a brand new AudioControl Maestro M5, which looks very nice, except (as far as I can see) it does parallel sub correction.

Anthem AVM60 has been recommended, but I think it does parallel dual sub correction.

Now if I'm focusing on dual sub correction too much, let me know.  I'm aware there's work arounds...but I always find native capability better than 'work arounds'.

Happy to get a second hand in-between pre, purchase doesn't have to be new.  Budget is $4,000.

Integra DRC-R1.1

https://integraworldwide.com/au/products/drcr1/index.htm

Should be able to get this one for around $4K

My much older (great sounding) 80.3 does subs independently and after checking the manuaI I am pretty sure this one does too.

By using a MiniDSP, you can effectively make 2 independent sub outs from any AVR or Pre-Pro. I have done that with a MiniDSP 2X4 HD and REW software. Cost including the measurement microphone is around A$500 from MiniDSP.com or slightly cheaper 2nd hand.

G'day John,

Thanks for the chime in.  What's the room correction like with this unit?

Apparently to allow for the increased number crunching required for ATMOS they dropped Audyssey XT32 for the less demanding Accu-EQ but I haven't heard it so can't really answer your question.

I believe it only corrects the front end and maybe only from mid range frequencies down (not 100% sure)

Have a look here........https://www.avsforum.com/threads/accueq-vs-audyssey.1580129/

At least you have another option from Huntsman if desired.

Yeah spot on John, good to increase the knowledge base.  I'll have a read up, thanks for your input mate.

The good thing about the right minidsp model Kaynin is avoiding the poor accueq and gaining proper sub bass summing . Check out the popular dirac models . https://www.minidsp.com/products/dirac-series/ddrc-88a

the bass management also opens up more pre pro options

Thanks for the link.  I’ll look today.  Need more options at the moment!

So if a pre manages two subbies parallel, does the inclusion of a minidsp unit manage them independently?

Yes ;the idea behind a minidsp unit is to take the 2 separate lfe feeds and sum them together so the room eq isnt equalising one sub then the other simultaneously doing phase etc in.. best to combine both.

Quote

The input signals are low-pass filtered and summed to generate the subwoofer signal;

Its what audyssey also does I believe .  Its also what Dirac is introducing with its bass management control for dirac2.0 ; but thats for dearer pre pro's that want it all built in so best to leave that atm :)

Thanks to the contributors, I've learnt something here.  After all said and done I've picked up an 8805.  CAV have been great to deal with...again!

Funny how more $ thrown at it usually makes the problem go away!!!!

Congrats and enjoy.
