Evening lads.

I've had a couple of new records for a week or so, but waited for the right time and mood... home from work with the weekend off.

Smashing Pumpkins  'Shiny and Oh So Bright, Vol 1-LP; No Past. No Future. No Sun.'  2018 Martha's Music. Napalm Records.  Made in Germany and U.S.A. Limited Edition Mystery Vinyl.

Wot a whopping intro that was.

2080556361_SmashingPumpkinsShinyandOhSoBrightVol1-LPNoPast.NoFuture.NoSun.2018MarthasMusic.NapalmRecords.MadeinGermanyandU.S.A.LimitedEditionMysteryVinyl..jpg.640dee1a603252985478a886b657d7cc.jpg

Made in Germany and USA???  What does that mean?  Discogs doesn't indicate other than "Vlado Meller Mastering". USA.

Not sure what to make of this album initially.  It's not grabbing me, so hopefully a grower.  Don't know about the sound, can't put my finger on it.  Produced by Rick Rubin.

Not sure if it's the production or the pressing, but something amiss here.  Will need a few more spins.

It's a limited edition of 500, with the potential of opening a glow in the dark vinyl.  Not this one.  Not numbered either.

This one however has taken me on first listen...

Sigur Rós  'Kveikur'  2013 XL Recordings.  Lacquer Cut at MPO France.

1849807912_SigurRsKveikur500.jpg.e358ef8edf910482ccb251b5e036b7cc.jpg

I've only heard '()' before.  I haven't heard any of their other albums.  I read that this was a little darker for them and not so well received.  That was enough for me to give it a crack.

Sound is great and I like it.

I was looking for something like this, a bit more laid back.  I like to break up the intensity of Metal and Heavy music.  Although this is a few years old now, it's new for me and I don't have a lot of this atmosphere on vinyl.

Very happy with this one.

Next up... second listen to this...

The Flaming Lips  'Oczy Mlody'  2017 Warner Bros. Records.  Printed in Canada.

81317737_TheFlamingLipsOczyMlody2017WarnerBros.Records.PrintedinCanada_600.jpg.a8bde478a09496cb4db932e10d9c7f86.jpg

This one says 'printed' in Canada, so don't know if that means 'pressed'.

I checked Discogs, again it's not listed where it was pressed.  Is that common?  I can't seem to find that info a lot of the time.

Am I missing something?

Ant.

There appears to be five 2018 release LP's of this album listed on Discogs, all 'Limited Edition', four different coloured discs with the same catalogue number (no mention of 'glow in the dark' though?) and one picture disc with a different catalogue number but two are listed as pressed by Optimal Media in Germany. With the lacquer being cut by an Optimal masterer " HL", I would be pretty confident that you have a German pressing Ant.?

Oh yeah....where it says "Made In Germany and United States" in the Discog 'notes', I'm guessing just the LP cover is made the US.?

Even on my non oversampling TDA1541A Player this sounds just sublime!

Strange, this release was on Electra, and I can find no trace on the internet of a HDCD release.

Yet this copy is on Universal and is indicated as HDCD and DSD.

my first spin

very smooth, very cool, the bass is really at the forefront (maybe a bit too hot)

possibly a little too relaxed this early on a Friday so time for something with a bit more fizz

I have this album and played it a couple of days ago and to me it does not sound too hot in the bass, may be system dependent ??

Hi Ant,

If you check the matrix on the deadwax 17992 1A CB/17992 2B CB, you’ll find this US/Cad release was mastered by Chris Bellman (CB) and pressed by Record Industry in the Netherlands.  So that means it was only printed in Canada.

I first bought the EU release which was pressed by Optimal Media. I thought the bass sounded very odd and muddy, everything else was fine. So I bought the US/Cad release to compare but the bass was merely slightly better and still sounding odd to me.

A while ago Amazon has the US 2xLP 45rpm colour vinyl Deluxe Edition on reduced price of $36 and I was lucky to get it. I would recommend getting it if you like this album. Really remarkable SQ and no more odd sounding dull bass.

OK, seems this is a China or Taiwan release, 3 layers, CD/HDCD/DSD if that's possible. Ah, hell, the CD layer sounds good if this is the case.

Spinning disk 2 of the set.

Manfred Mann's Earth Band "Chance" Canadian 1st pressing.

Giving this another spin to see if it grows on me.....initial listens have it sounding to me a bit too 80's soft rock. I definitely prefer their proggier 70's stuff but I think there is enough here (and enough Moog wizardry) to like and warm to.

Give this a few more spins Steve, then put it away for a month and try again then for a 5th or 6th play. If it doesn't work by then, it probably won't at all.

MMEB were one of the better UK prog bands doing the rounds in the early 70's but lost their way the following decade.

The first 3 tracks feature the brilliant vocals of Chris Thompson who has been credited with having one of the best voices in rock, (along with Greg Lake - ELP / King Crimson). Your mileage may vary but I'd agree those dudes have a great set of pipes.

Chance is probably the last album in the MMEB repertoire that you'd want as the latter output is pretty naff.

Also of note is the appearance of Shona Laing (NZ) who sang with the band between 1981-2. She's that rather spunky bird with the husky voice that had a few minor hits, Soviet Snow and (Glad I'm) Not A Kennedy.

Saw them in(Manfred Mann) Sydney with Deep Purple and Free and again at Wollongong Showground in '73. (MMEB) :)

I did enjoy Chance it a bit more that last time but it is not as consistent as their earlier stuff.....some fine tracks on it though. I'll give it another 'chance'.?

Agree with you on Kiwi Chris Thompson, a superb rock voice which also graced a few Alan Parsons Project albums as well.?

The Darling Downs - In the Days When the World was Wide

In the days when both Melbourne and Australian music were new to me, I read in one of the local music papers about a free Sunday afternoon gig being held by a new band led by Kim salmon. It was at the Casino, just up the road from where I lived, and the article said Kim Salmon was a well-known Australian musician so I thought it worth a look. The room was quite full, I was up the front, and so before the music started I heard the disparaging remark from KS to a band member about the audience being a bunch of cheapskates who wouldn't buy any music to save themselves (four-letter words included). I thought, "Must remember to be a cheapskate as far as this artist's music goes" and so, having paid a dollar at an op shop for this album, no royalties to the artist, I can report it is actually quite good but hardly endearing. Which I think summarises the whole affair, really.

Tool first up this arvo.  Yep.  Niiiice.

Then a local band/dude, think of a Secret Chiefs 3 kinda vibe, middle eastern-ish sounding instruments with a bit of a metal... thing at times.  Pretty cool.

SUMERIANTONGUE.BANDCAMP.COM

Then onto Bongripper.  Damn this is a good drone/doom album.  Starts off slow and low, and builds.  Some good heavy moments throughout.  Do like!
