Please recommend floor standing speaker.

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I've been looking to buy floor standing speaker for 6 months and haven't made a decision yet.

Ironically, I bought all other materials such as speaker cables, streamer, Integrated amp and RCA cable..

Actually I was going to buy Evoke 50, but changed mind as a price of brand new one was around 6k.. (I paid deposit, but got refunded, cuz I thought better go with 2nd hand)

I have auditioned Kef R series, Dynaudio evokes, Triangle, Sonus Fabre, B&W 7 & 8 series, Paradigms..

I listen vocal oriented musics (especially female vocals).. can anyone recommend under 3.5k..

I have Plinius Hautonga.

Cheers.

There are many many many options. For vocal I like Focal Aria 926 and those flax drivers look very cool.

Did you visit Len Wallis and Life Style Store?

yes I’ve been there many times but unfortunately they dont have Focal...

Len Wallis use to have Focal but now they move to Triangle.

Life Style Store use to have Focal only for cars but now they also have other speakers. I mean they have it on website I don't know which ones are available for demo.

There are sometimes Arias 926 secound hand for sale but they sell very fast.

Although some of the bookshelf beat a number of floor standers.

OP said used $3.5k floorstander so that means anything that was $5-10k rrp.

More common used items that come up are ATC40 $3-4K, VAF I-66 $1.5-3k, Proacs, Sonus Faber Cremona $4k, B&W various, Dynaudio 82 and 380/38 $1-3k, Spendor, Focals like 1027 and 826 $2k, Monitor Audio 50, Vienna Acoustics.

I know someone with Gammut Phi 7 if you like can ask them around $3k.

Would go for three way driver floorstander than most two way designs to get the better midrange detail with some exceptions like Martin Logan Ethos $4k electrostatic or Ambience Ribbon hybrids $1-3k.

Fantastic amp. I always liked Dyns on your amp and all other Plinius gear.

There are 2 pairs of Excite floorstanders on here at the moment in your budget.

Dynaudio is the most like the one so far and that’s the reason why I bought Hautonga first as it’s so hard to find a stock since covid’s happend. I have already seen those posts and still thinking about x44. I would buy contour 3.4 le but a guy who is selling x38 bought it faster than me from a seller. haha. I love Hautonga!!! I have auditioned many many amps and pick this!

If I can suggest something cheaper than most speakers on this list, you can buy a DIY Peerless 6.5" MTM floor standing speaker kit with nice looking, ready-finished black or jarrah veneer cabinets from Wagner Electronics or the Loudspeaker Kit: about $1800 pair, all you have to do is screw in the drivers and connect the wires.

Stated efficiency is 92dB, high end Peerless drivers.  Reportedly great sound and they don't look like DIY.

Here's the link:

And they're $1600 pr, in jarrah; cheaper in black vinyl. Cabinets are apparently Australian made, so you're not paying for the shipping from overseas.

Thanks for your suggestion Geoff.

It's quite attractive, but I don't trust my hand skills. Do you know where can I audition them? Actually the shop is located in NSW, so it's even better.

Well, really all you have to do  - from the description and the instruction - is screw in the drivers and mount the crossover boards, the holes are already drilled. Then you just connect the wires from the crossover to the drivers , so provided you're handy with a screwdriver, I don't think there would be a problem.  There's no finishing, the cabinets are already assembled so you don't need to make sawdust.

At least in the older releases of these kits, the drivers are Danish made, not Chinese made if that makes a difference to the sound. The tweeters alone retail for over $100 each, the woofers for about $100 each.

I'd ring Wagner and see how you go, I'm not sure whether they have a showroom.  Not sure how the COVID situation is going in NSW, but in Melbourne all shops are closed anyway so you can't audition anything.

I should stress that I haven't heard these speakers, but Peerless HDS drivers are excellent.

I believe they're designed by Stones Sound Studios in Brisbane; again, suggest check that with Wagner.

Ok. I will contact Wagner to check whether they have a demo. Luckily, none of the shops in NSW are closed, so all the Hi-Fi shops are still running their business without any restrictions at the moment.

Hope all the restrictions in VIC release soon.

Good luck with your search!

The speakers are, I think, called Peerless HDS455: you might find some reviews online, and I think the Stones Sound Studios have some reviews on their website.

Here's some info for you, including a crossover mod from a third party to improve the sound.

NB I don't have any connection with Wagner, Peerless etc - but I like getting good value for money!

Hi Min.

Sorry, bit late to the party here, but FWIW, I’ve very happily used Plinius amplification for the past 20 years or so. Best synergy I’ve had has been with Harbeths (though admittedly not floorstanders), and ProAc.

Have driven ProAc Response Threes with the M16P / SA 100 III combo (sooo good), ProAc Tablette Reference 8 Signatures via the 9200 integrated, and currently using the same 9200 to Very successfully drive my keepers - ProAc D48Rs.

I’d be confident that the Hautonga would be equally happy driving offerings from either of these designers.

There was also a time when some Plinius dealers in NZ were pairing them quite successfully with Shahinian speakers.....

Good luck.

Cheers Brian
