bryansamui
Hi.. I'm getting like a fairly loud (ish) ' crack' sound through my speakers about every 30 mins . Like an electrical discharge.. My gut feeling is it is a cap on its way out on my power amp?? . You can almost put a clock to it every half hour or so. Is this ' Spike' or sharp sound going to hurt my speakers.?? . Its no louder than the music being played at the time and its duration would be a Millisecond or so. Any expertise would me much appreciated.. Cheers. pete_mac
If it's 'crack' sound, it's more likely to be transistor-related rather than a capacitor. That said, it would be useful to know what kind of amp you're using.

A.K.
If I am not mistaken, your preamplifier uses valves rather than transistors, right? Switch the whole system off. Let it rest for 10 minutes or so. Switch on only your power amp with the preamp off. Wait to see / hear if the 'crack (or is it thump?), comes back. If not, it's obvious the preamplifier has a problem. If you've got another (spare) power amp, connect it to your preamp and wait for the 'noise'. Let us know how you go with it.
