Rega RP8 - Repair & Service

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

Last year I considered getting into vinyl. A combination of reasons has put a stop to that pursuit.

I picked up a Rega RP8 from a Sydney Hifi store that was sourced as part of a deceased estate. I've yet to spin a record on it since owning it. I've tried to sell it twice, and both times the sellers have returned it. The first instance was because there was an issue with the power-supply which I replaced. The second time the seller suggested that it was dropped all though he couldn't tell me exactly why he felt this way!

I want to take the TT to someone who can tell me exactly whats wrong with it, and what if anything needs to be done to sell the damn thing once and for all.

I've Google'd and found a few places but my emails have either gone unanswered, or the common response has been an attempt to up-sell me to another TT (even though I've mentioned I want to get out of Vinyl - LOL!)

I was hoping someone in the know in Sydney could point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance!

GS

Hi GS, there are two places I know of. Len Wallis Audio and Audio Genesis.

LWA I have been couple of times to resolder my cartridge clips. They have done a good job.

AG is where I bought my Rega P9 from, Harry at AG is great, his experience and passion on TT is excellent. He is specialised on Linn but I think he is also good at Rega?

There is also Kimi (I think thats what it is called) electronic but I haven't been there before my mate did and also had good experience there.

Hope this help.

Cheers

Dw

Much appreciated @dwbasement! Didn't know of Audio Genesis and they aren't too far away. I'll pop in and see them. :)

No problem mate.

Just note that parking there is a pain, there are couple of spots right outside if you are lucky otherwise you can park at the back streets nearby.

Good luck.

Plus 1 for Harry. Great guy to deal with and he will be able to tell if anything is wrong.

That's the thing mate - I can't see anything bent at all. I think he was thrown by the fact that the RP8 comes with in the skeletal format, fitting into the more traditional square shape of a turn table. His loss frankly as I sold it to him for silly money.

Yes, I agree when I saw your ad I was tempted and I don't even need another turntable.

Hi Everyone,

Great news. I popped down to Audio Gensis and spoke to Harry. Lovely bloke who took a look at the RP8 and gave it a clean bill of health.

He did everything except mount a cartridge on it and play a record which is to say he connected the SMPS to the TTPSU which he then connected to RP8 and observed the platter turning. He then checked the RB808 tonearm and gave it the okay.

The only issue we picked up on, which apparently purely aesthetic, is that one of the barrels phono plugs is no longer in place. I've reached out the Rega for a replacement barrel but am afraid I may have to buy an entirely new cable?

Is the process of replacing the cable as easy one?

Replacing the cable is not easy. You have two choices:

1. Rewire the arm

2. Have a DIN plug fitted at the base of the tonearm and use a cable with a DIN plug.

I would do neither and use it as it is.

Are you planning on selling it or keeping it?

Hi Mate - thanks for the quick reply. Harry's advice was to do the same. Use as is. I plan on selling it.

I have identified another option for you. I personally would not bother if you are selling it but you can buy an Rega RCA cable pair and use the barrel from that pair:

https://www.analogueseduction.net/rega-upgrades-parts-accessories/rega-locking-phono-rca-plugs-set-of-2.html

They appear to be identical to me.

I think that your price was a bit low last time, so you might want to adjust your price.

Ah! Great idea - thank you. :)

My inclination is similar to yours 'm not going to re-wire the arm, nor buy a second cable.

I'm going to list the whole setup for $2K this time given the over-whelming response I got last time! I've got someone who contacted me while the unit was in repair. I've let them know the price, so will take it from there. :)

Thanks for all your help!

Harry is such a nice guy and knows his way around a Linn and Rega deck. Glad to hear you had a positive experience.
