I purchased this unit just prior to Xmas 2020 with great intentions. If you are unaware of the remarkable abilities of this unit Google and you will be suitably impressed. For those that know about the Star i need to make no further comment. The unit has not had the use it deserves or will it get the use due to my current commitments. So with a very heavy heart and regret i am selling this beautiful piece of equipment to hopefully someone that will get the true pleasure in enjoying its visual and aural pleasure. It presents like new and comes in its original box with manuals

This is a great little unit that I bought after reading some measurements on. It has 2 functions, one to act as a buffer that uses Jfets to provide a high input impedance and low output impedance and to provide a very accurate attenuation of source.
The other function is where you switch off the Jfet section and use the relay volume pot to provide attenuation. In that function it is as benign a passive buffer / attenuator as you could hope to get. And it has remote control, multiple inputs and dual outputs so it's covered in terms of convenience.
I ran it between my DAC and preamp to do a comparison between having in in circuit and then having nothing (except interconnects!) between them. This revealed that the passive attenuator had the slightest nuance of effect, perhaps just taming high frequencies a smidge but nothing else.
In Jfet mode, it was much the same but the bass and treble extension seems to extend a tad more and there is a slightly more muscular emphasis in the lower midrange / bass region (tiny amount).
Output impedance raises as the attenuation is increased (volume is decreased) so make sure your amplifier, or whatever you are driving has an input impedance of over 30K ohms (most sensible amplifiers are in excess of this)
So if you need a remote preamp that is very transparent and has a good range of features, this is a good choice!
