"NEW" DIY Speaker Kits / Projects / Designs - Speaker's

Recommended Posts

Hi All,

I've been searching around to purchase a set of speakers at a budget between $3000 - $4000 and I'm just not impressed with what is to offer. Most are just square box designs and I know most you can source the parts for 50% of the total cost of a branded names.

Post any DIY's, projects, kits etc you think are great value?

Looks like most Australian speaker manufacturers if not all source their speakers from Europe using SB acoustics & Scan Speak.

A quick search I've found a couple of models from the manufacturers that use the SB acoustics. Can't believe the total price increase that they put on their models.

These custom built SB Acoustics designed ARA white enclosure/speakers/crossover are available from Wagner On Line in kit form. They use top of the line Satori woofers and tweeters.  I had to wait 4 months for the enclosures to come from Europe.

Price would be around $2000. Enclosures with quality fittings $800. Crossovers $350 pair. Satori Mid/Woofers $500 pair. Satori silk domed tweeters $400 pair. They are about 550mm tall and they will require substantial stands because they are heavy.

Just assemble them with push fit connectors and you are in business.

I am using mine as bass drivers without tweeters for my Australian ER Audio ESL kit mini panels, bi-amped with Hypexes, StereoCoffee LDR passive preamp and active crossovers. Mine are sitting on a diy platform with aluminium feet.

Cheers,

Rob

What are the LK1’s like Batty?

Very detailed and surprising bass for the size. They are still running in atm with only about 20 hours on them, if that.

Imaging is good too.

I build a pair last year - was lots of fun, and I learnt how to (and how NOT to) do wood veneering.  I currently use them as rear surrounds, but in a smaller room they would be excellent.  They look small, but they are actually pretty substantial little speakers.  I think mated with a sub (or two) they would kick arse.

The  SBA 761 is  a Troels Gravesen designed speaker but he was commissioned by SB Acoustics so all the design details are freely available and the crossovers are simple so easy and cheap to build. It uses all Satori drivers.

Adelaide Speakers also sell some of their designs as kits and are very good value.

Consider also:

Wagner Aust online with good quality Seas driver designs https://www.wagneronline.com.au/audio-speakers-pa/ps/

Madisound USA https://www.madisoundspeakerstore.com/3-way-speaker-kits/

Humble Home made speakers in Europe for some different designs http://www.humblehomemadehifi.com/speakers.html

Zaphaudio USA http://www.zaphaudio.com

Also, some of Troels G older designs can be found free on google search http://www.troelsgravesen.dk/Diy_Loudspeaker_Projects.htm

Given that 10% parts and materials costs is a common proportion figure for the total retail price one may not get much quality drivers for a $4000 speaker, with some exceptions, so $400 parts and materials worth, say half that for drivers so you may be looking at $10-50 cheap drivers. With buying local Australian manufacturered Speakers vs overseas you might get about 20% parts and materials proportion so double that better value. For example, a VAF I-66 Speakers uses very high quality Seas drivers, $300 per midrange and woofer and $500 tweeters. It’s possible to also buy expensive $10-30k overseas commercial speakers with $30-50 tweeters if you don’t know any better, though they may still sound quite OK.
