What/where to get tonearm wire?

Recommended Posts

I'm rebuilding my Pro-ject RPM 5.1 and want to rewire my 9cc tonearm. Where is a good place to get new wire and lugs (maybe silver solder too)? And what brand would you recommend with good quality but reasonable price. I look for Cardas stuff but they seem to cost heaps!

Local eBay seller dkeagostdavid has good wire. I’ve bought some and it’s good quality.

I bought the PCOCC for $44.90 incl postage and it arrived in two days. He also has pure silver if you want it.

I upgraded an Origin Live Zephyr tonearm to silver a long time ago.

Didn't notice much improvement going down this route.

By 2. This what I use, realy want the lightest flexible wire you can find. Would recommend getting better cartridge tags, these are too long and flimsy.

Single strand is too ridged and heavy, especially silver.

Pay special attention to

Consists of 30 strands of .04mm copper wrapped in silk thread.
It is easily colour coded using felt tipped pens & takes readily to solder. The best way to tin the ends is to just heat it with the soldering iron whilst applying solder. The silk will burn off & leave a residue which you can remove with your fingers (once the wire has cooled off). Have a damp sponge nearby to wipe the soldering iron tip on. The heat also fuses the silk so it wont unravel.

Is there a problem with the tonearm wiring in the arm?

Cardas wire sounds good!

It's very flexible, and solders well.

I can't think of any reason to use anything else.

I used 33awg Mogami to do my arm. The only advice that I would give is if you buy new clips, make sure you are getting cartridge clips as a lot seem to be selling female d-sub pins for silly money... and you can get them from any electronic store very cheaply.
