Further information:

Hi all,

I’m selling my STAX SR009 + Woo WES (2nd Gen) amp combo as I no longer have the time to listen and am therefore looking to downgrade.

What can I say, this setup has been a dream to listen to and I’m very reluctant to let it go. It’s been extremely well treated over the years and the headphones have been kept either in their wooden box or under their dust cover when not in use.
There are a few very minor cosmetic scratches on the amplifier.
No marks on the headphones whatsoever, they’re in pristine condition. The pads look the same as they did when new.

The Woo WES was recently upgraded to the 2nd Gen for even better sound quality in September 2019 by shipping it to Woo Audio in the US: https://wooaudio.com/amplifiers/wes

The tubes were also replaced at this time with a full set of brand new stock tubes provided by Woo and they have barely even been broken in.

It comes with the headphones and amp (of course), Stax wooden stand, Stax 2.5m extension cable and spare tubes.

The plastic tube guard on the WES amp is also included but I've never used it as I prefer the look of it off.

Local pickup is an option, but I’m willing to post to anywhere in Australia as I still have the original packaging for the Woo amp to ensure it will be safe in transit. It’s quite heavy and would require a few boxes though so postage wouldn’t be cheap.

Auditioning might not be the best idea given the COVID-19 circumstances.

Feel free to message if you have any questions.

Thanks,
Tim

Great energisers, especially when you have the ballast mod done so it doesn't fry the driver coating over time.

I really don't believe that mod is required at all. Woo has been making the WES for almost 10 years now and I haven't read a single case of it actually causing damage to the drivers.  If there was a known issue, and something as simple as changing the ballast resistors, it surely would have been fixed in the 2nd Gen.

These should have a 5M ballast resistor on the output. The issue was with the early serial silver only units and the Woo Wee.

      Absolute beast of an amp.
Please note the 851W is pictured with it's accompanying 861D DAC (both for sale)

Here's the technical specs from the makers.

      CLASS XD
Rather than use a Class A design, which is sonically brilliant but generates vast amounts of heat, or a Class AB design, which is efficient but sonically limited, we developed our own Class XD amplifier design which the 851W takes advantage of. This has the sonic purity of Class A and the efficiency of Class AB for the best of both worlds. For more information on our unique patented Class XD technology watch the video at the bottom of the page or click here for a full description.

      TERRAPIN BUFFERING
When designing a stereo system, listeners are often encouraged to think about system matching, where components are handpicked to provide the best overall sound quality. People often assume this is due to the different audio characteristics, but frequently it is due to impedance (the relationship between voltage and current input/output) matching components. Products perform at their optimum when their input and output impedances match. This isn’t always possible though so we decided to develop our unique Terrapin impedance buffering module. This enables the 851W to be paired with a huge variety of audio sources and pre-amplifiers of varying impedance without risking any sacrifice in musicality or overall audio performance.

      POWER AND CONTROL
To build the 851W to be the best toroidal transformers were essential. But rather than use one for everything we designated one for the sound amplification itself, and another for the input circuitry. This means the signal is unaffected by audio output volume, so always sounds fantastic. The primary toroidal transformer provides unrestricted power to the dual mono amplification blocks. It’s a true audiophile transformer that will operate without distortion and with no buzz, interference or hum. The second smaller toroidal transformer takes care of pre-amplification processes. View the videos below for an insight on why we use toroidal transformers.

      FLEXIBLE CONFIGURATION
The 851W can be used in stereo, bi-amped or bridged mono configurations. In bridged mono mode into 8 Ohms the 851W is a 500W monoblock amplifier. Into 4 Ohms, this figure increases to an incredible 800W. It can be paired with our 851E pre-amp, any of our digital pre-amps such as the 851N or CXN, or any other analogue pre-amps, and thanks to our Terrapin buffering module it will always sound perfectly matched.

      CAP 5 PROTECTION
Our proprietary CAP 5 protection system protects the 851W, plus any connected equipment and speakers, ensuring ultimate reliability and peace of mind. For more
