If you do not need it, go for a cheaper model. Synology is easy to use. Have a 4 bay NAS (DS414), for my music and for rest of family. As long as you are comfortable with setting up the NAS and the disk drives (suggest buying either Seagate Ironwolf or WD Red), go for it. There is some work involved is setting up. Or you could ask your friend to set it up. Edited May 4, 2020 by Snoopy8 Typo

billy170468
@Snoopy8 So I should get the "non-play" version? https://www.synology.com/en-au/products/DS218 Edited May 4, 2020 by billy170468
Snoopy8
Use this to select according to your needs and budget https://www.synology.com/en-au/support/nas_selector At the end of the day, music creates a small load on a NAS and any one will do.
craka
I use the Synology DS415play to stream movies and music. Music is directly to an SOTM ultra. Does it all without a breaking a sweat.
Indie Hi-Fi
@billy170468 with the synology, i have the DS118. It's fast enough for music with Roon but just note that synology have a recycle function by default. Just this week i tried to delete and re-add half the disc size in music files. Then it said it was max capacity and roon ground to a halt. I realised the synology had put all the deleted files in the recycle folder within it and so the disk truly was full. You can turn off the recycle feature easily though. It did my head in for a stretch.
