Wifey and I share the dining room table. My end is closest to camera.

As you can see, the audio system is in the same space so no need for anything else.

I started working from home last week.

Had to drag my computer desk out of the garage where's it's been gathering dust for the last 10 years.  Well, half of it anyway.

Decided I need some desktop speakers.  Not sure these quite cut it... :D

IMG_20200324_113242-01.jpg.d559ac95cd2ed852a6ae414b74b76d0d.jpg

But that wasn't going to work like that unfortunately, so had to modify things slightly.  And I really had to buy an external monitor.  And after about 30 seconds, I really wish I'd bought an 1440p one instead of just HD.  :(

Currently ripping a few CDs that I should have done months ago.

Woo hoo!

Although sitting a couple of metres in line and to the right of the stereo does suck somewhat a lot.

pop quiz...

...How many failed attempts at the password does Microsoft Office 365 allow before locking out the account?

22 hours ago, PauliD said:

@almikel it may depend on your ITs policy, but I’d say three attempts before you’d have to call help desk.

Goodluck!

For Office365 it's managed by Microsoft - and the answer is unlimited - IT departments need to ensure they have sufficient controls in place against hackers, as cyber attacks have increased dramatically throughout COVID-19

I stand corrected and happy to know that. It must be on the computer itself I’m thinking about. 👍

Ah, the Stereonet website on the big monitor and those speakers.  :)  Good to see the priorities are in order.  👍

Office 365 does a 60 sec lockout after 10 failed attempts - further incorrect sign-in attempts lockout the user for increasing times - but by design the account is never locked out permanently.

I recently saw 18 failed attempts over 5 minutes on one of our exec's O365 account before the hacker went elsewhere.

Enforced strong passwords and Multi Factor Authentication helps a lot, well as controls such as "impossible travel" preventing authentication from a different country if a recent successful authentication placed the user in a location where the user couldn't have travelled that far in the timeframe.

Ongoing end user education is the hard part - getting users to understand not to click on links in phishing emails, or worse enter their usernames and passwords.

Unfortunately the best IT controls are often circumvented by poor behaviours...and the hackers of the world are having a field day with COVID-19 :(

I've started a new thread on IT security during COVID-19 to stop polluting this thread:

basically everything I need to do can be done from home as long as I have phone/internet access:

  1. setup/attend/participate in meetings across a range of topics
  2. write/edit/review/discuss documents
  3. manage emails
  4. plan and deliver projects
  5. order kit for project delivery
  6. goods receipt kit that has been delivered
  7. plan and manage budgets - FY21 budgets are a very hot topic in my world atm...with laser scrutiny being applied
  8. present information to managers - really the same as 1
  9. discuss all of the above with staff and stakeholders

Our Brisbane office closed on Friday - but I have to be in the office tomorrow to physically take delivery of some kit arriving - after that I'll bug out.

cheers

Mike

how do you find the "curved screen" thing?

Do you have the same at work?

When the dust settles, perhaps work from home is something our communities should take more of an advantage of.

As an "essential" worker the commute to and from work is much more pleasant at the moment.

Hi Mike, the curved screen is excellent. I use it as two screens and find it brilliant. I deal with documents and drafting a lot. I am not a ‘gamer’. You don’t notice the curve when sitting in front of it.
At work I have 2 screens.

I was thinking about the guitars...which I can't play...

...Working from home has motivated me to pick up the harmonica again...when I say "motivated" I mean made me think about it...and writing it down made me go and find them...

several hours of harmonica practise since Tuesday and I'm about 80% back to where I was when I stopped...I just need to keep it going...

9 days till payday - I'm gonna buy a bit of software called "Amazing Slow Downer"...handy for beginners wanting to slow tracks down and loop sections...

...The band I sing in had a catch up over Skype - we had a crack at a jam session, but the latency mucks up the timing...

...it was an interesting experiment...we all tried to clap in time...and the latency turned it into slow applause/an audience that can't clap in time - hilarious...

...we'll try Zoom, but I expect it's the same deal across any platform (latency)...everything is over IP (Internet Protocol) these days, with a server or servers connecting all the disparate end points - it's not surprising that having a music jam over the web isn't workable :(

One of the local music shops is staying open, advising customers to "maintain social distancing of 1.5m - that's 2 Vox amps or 1.5 Stratocasters"...unfortunately no help at all for drummers...😎

...stay safe...stay home...play music

Well I have always worked from home anyway.Or rather from my shed.

The locals seem to be observing social distancing so all is well.

I don't know how so many of you are sitting so close to your HiFi gear but off to the side. Just turn your chair a little or run a extension cord to the sweet spot.

Or is are you already sitting there the most of the time and just getting up every so often to check your laptop for emails. :D

We use Zoom for orchestra practice (community orchestra) and it is crap. Even when only the one violin is playing and the rest is muted you get latency and the beat is all over the place which makes for fun playing.................

Handbrake is working from home and thankfully the house is big enough and two storey so that we have a reasonable degree of separation. She's teaching hearing impaired kiddies and video conferencing. She's never quite worked out that her expensive laptop will pickup up her voice even at whispering levels.

She's dealing with 19 year old deaf kids doing their final year and also toddlers in nappies as she shows their young parents how to interact.

For the kiddies with cochlear implants she's been doing finger puppets and singing Old McDonald's farm.

She can't sing. Tone deaf and she's loud... Like seriously loud, banshee loud.

But as she's the main bread winner at the moment I'm dealing with it ok.

I too am working from home.

Found this door under the house.

Decided to pull the wall down and move it back a metre and rebuild it (no easy task).
