What he says is that you don't need that much of an amp to drive 3a well. His view on the amps is probably different from yours, as you probably know if you spoke to him. And I have NEVER stated that Luxman amps are adequate or inadequate (though some models are, undeniably, crap). What I am saying is that the L530 is not a great match for the AR3a speakers. Other Luxman amps might be a better match and the L530 is certainly a good sounding amp, when used with easier speaker loads than the 3a.

And in my experience high current thing didn't necessarily made for better sounds. I just don't find amps that critical and Ken seemingly thinks so. You want to disagree that's fine but if you have to talk about authoritative views I'd go with Ken's.

darth vader
SX-1980 in for a service. I posted this pic a while back, Got asked for some under the bonnet shots. Its still working fine but some of the switches are getting a bit crackly so I sent it away for a birthday. Getting all pots and switches cleaned (naturally) and most of the caps tested for spec. Any that are showing any signs of age will be replaced. Word back was after a visual inspection it looks really good. Transistors are still fixed to the heatsinks well, no caps showing physical signs of damage and does not looked to have been messed with in any way. My tech has instructions to take his time and do any work required. The only thing that was what you could consider a fault was tuner dial alignment (101.1 was more like 101.9). I'll be keeping all the original incandescent lamps as they all work and with it being so original theres no sense going for LED's. The only other thing of note was the 40 or so years accumulation of webs and moths, but you get that at that age with such open vent panels. Anyway, I'm looking forward to it coming home and having some fun with it. 1
betocool
Spiderwebs... a bit OT but still... Back in the day when they built the first computer, it was a mess of wires and wrap connection much like the ones in the picture above. At some point in time, a particular computer started failing. So the engineers opened it up and found a spider had nested there and was happily laying eggs. Must have been the warmth. Once they took the spider out, everything started working again. That was the first "debugging" (removing a bug) of a computer. Nowadays it's a common term. Your amp could use some debugging... Damien Collins
I had added to this thread about my purchase of the Pioneer sx-5530 Receiver which was only sold in American PX stores in Europe. Mine came from Poland. I had really liked the look of vintage receivers and took to heart Zaphods war stories IIRC of the late '70s when Marantz slugged it out with Pioneer for affordable but quality receivers. I had read that Zahod was Marantz and he only rated Pioneer as a rival. Im sure there was more to it but I cant find exact statement. Whether I had it right or not I took it to heart. I then sourced Marantz 2238 and a 2240B and wanted more so then threw another challenge into the mix as I had come across Marantz' black face receiver look. Too expensive for me but this led me down the rabbit hole to the SX series from Pioneer, which are 240 volt (Euro). So gradually the Pioneer running Proac clones took up the space where the Marantzes had lay. Its busy in my wall of sound with my Sansui AU-417 running into B&W 602S3. My main system is not Vintage, Yammy AS500 into Elac. Anyway once the $ hit $.80US I started up again with the late night prowling, and now I have a SX-5560 shipping from Kentucky as many service men took them home after their tour of duty. I was going to ask if there was interest on Stereo net but a mate immediately asked how much i wanted for it. Anyway I dont post much but as I had added to the story and because I love this thread (Im looking for AR3a!!) I thought Id say what happened. Is Pioneer better than comparable Marantz? Slightly different sound, I like the Pioneer but Im keeping the Marantz. Edited September 24, 2017 by dammers31 sp

Anway, I'm looking forward to it coming home and having some fun with it. I bet you're looking fwd to it. The 1980 - released in 1978..is legendary (and I don't use that term very often when it comes to vintage hifi) among those that know their receivers, well "monster" receivers in particular. A VERY conservative 270 watts into 8 ohms rated, what 30 or 35kg in weight...Amazing piece of gear...
darth vader
@The Fez They also have a fantastic sounding tuner, the best I've heard to date. I am looking forward to its return, but I want to be sure everything is right in it. They are very rare here and scarce in the US but this one is spotless and unmolested so its worth keeping it that way. Your right at 270WPC and 35kg. I dont like moving it, it really is a monster. Played a copy of Oscar Peterson Night Train and it was beautiful. All the instruments sounded like they were in position. I know a that album is good for that anyway. Ihave it hooked up to the Richter's in the bedroom. Cd player ads remote and volume. They really come from a time when Yamaha was going all out and it is pretty obvious. The bass player is casualty hanging out left of stage and the snare is to the right. Hi hat even across. Piano sitting the middle, maybe off to the right a bit.
