Jayson H Posted February 12, 2020 Share Posted February 12, 2020 Hey there. I need to update my AVR. Previously had a Marantz SR4000, then an Onkyo TX-Sr706, which is suffering from HDMI issues. I have Wharfdale Diamond 8.4 fronts and Aaron centre and surrounds, and a Loudspeakerkit 150W Sub. I am looking at the secondhand market. For a budget of around $500, I am after some opinions on buying say a 10 year old ex-top of the line AVR, or a 5 year old middle-tier? I am looking for surround sound quality, with some music ability. 7.1 would be preferred. For example, I have seen a Cambridge Azur that has 7.1, but is 10 years old. I am also keen on a Yamaha, I have seen a RX-V3900, and various RX-V units in that price range. Is it a case of technology and quality trickling down over a few years? for example the basic yamaha today is the same as the top of the line one from 6 years ago? Or is the basic model always lesser quality? Any thoughts or opinions would be gratefully accepted, as I scan through the classifieds and Gumtree/Facebook. Older AVRs are less likely to support the more recent ones e.g. Atmos. Power is usually better with high end models. Don't rely on the marketing BS. Take the total power consumption divided by number of channels at 50% efficiency to get a realistic number. In other words, get an AVR with a larger power consumption. Brands with better music capability are Cambridge, Marantz, Anthem, Arcam, NAD. And no, technology and quality does not trickle down over the years. There are more marketing ticks in newer models but are they needed? The 3900 will have more power, probably equivalent power to current yamaha $2K models. I would go for that if you are happy with condition. It might need new caps at some stage if they have never been replaced (mine needed doing about 5 years ago, have owned it for around 10 years total). Was an early adopter of 7.1 but now on 5.1 (and will go Atmos one day). Don't miss 7.1. Ethernet used for firmware updates, software Apps e.g. phone App, setups etc. Easiest way from PC streaming to AVR is with HDMI. Or use a player that streams with HDMI output. I've tried Atmos & DTS:X using the Pioneer SP-T22A-LR (bouncy speakers) place on top of Front Left & Right Speakers. Or use a player that streams with HDMI output. wouldn't say this in the full case for the RX-V1081 the Ethernet and Wifi are for the internet and LAN this will give you the ability to upgrade the FW (as stated) as the RX-V1081 has spoify, tidal, dezzer and airplay build in, you can stream straight from the AVR, no extra player needed add a DNLA NAS anywhere in your network and stream/play your only music also use the Yamaha app from phone/tablet (as stated) you cant play video over the Eth/wifi, you do need an external source for this these functions are what I miss the most on my new XMC-2 1 Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

Currently I use a PC, with VLC Media Player, then via Wifi to Chromecast. Due to the HDMI issues with the Onkyo, the Chromecase is plugged into the TV, then via Optical to the Onkyo. Not the best solution, but the only one I have for now.... Would PC-Chromecast-AV receiver be the same as PC-AV Receiver via ethernet? or should I start a new thread on this topic?
