Second hand AVR Hi-end older or middle tier younger?

Recommended Posts

Hey there.  I need to update my AVR. Previously had a Marantz SR4000, then an Onkyo TX-Sr706, which is suffering from HDMI issues.

I have Wharfdale Diamond 8.4 fronts and Aaron centre and surrounds, and a Loudspeakerkit 150W Sub.

I am looking at the secondhand market.

For a budget of around $500, I am after some opinions on buying say a 10 year old ex-top of the line AVR, or a 5 year old middle-tier?  I am looking for surround sound quality, with some music ability.  7.1 would be preferred.

For example, I have seen a Cambridge Azur that has 7.1, but is 10 years old.  I am also keen on a Yamaha, I have seen a RX-V3900, and various RX-V units in that price range.

Is it a case of technology and quality trickling down over a few years? for example the basic yamaha today is the same as the top of the line one from 6 years ago?  Or is the basic model always lesser quality?

Any thoughts or opinions would be gratefully accepted, as I scan through the classifieds and Gumtree/Facebook.

Cheers

Firstly, decide what features you need, including what audio formats for movies.  Older AVRs are less likely to support the more recent ones e.g. Atmos.

Power is usually better with high end models. Don't rely on the marketing BS. Take the total power consumption divided by number of channels at 50% efficiency to get a realistic number.  In other words, get an AVR with a larger power consumption.

Brands with better music capability are Cambridge, Marantz, Anthem, Arcam, NAD.

And no, technology and quality does not trickle down over the years. There are more marketing ticks in newer models but are they needed?

AVRs depreciate quickly, so going 2nd hand is a sensible move and get a high end model with the capability you want.

My RXV-1800 (so one model down and one year older than the 3900) is still going strong. The 3900 will have more power, probably equivalent power to current yamaha $2K models. I would go for that if you are happy with condition. It might need new caps at some stage if they have never been replaced (mine needed doing about 5 years ago, have owned it for around 10 years total).

If it was me, I'd be looking at something a little be later like a RX-V3071. See:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-AV-Receiver-RX-V3071-top-of-the-range-when-purchased/174183951249

Had a RRP of $2499 and was the top of the line in the V Series in 2012. See:

Wants $600. Make an offer! See how you go. One sold here on stereonet in Aug 2019 for $560. See:

Another sold here for $500 in Oct 2018. See:

Same internals as a RX-A3010 which had a RRP of $2699 in 2012. See:

ROTFLMAO?

But seriously, this had a $1,999.00 RRP in 2016/2017 when new. See:

https://www.digitalcinema.com.au/yamaha-rx-v1081-7-2-channel-av-receiver.html

Has 4K Ultra HD Full Support with 4K/60p, 4:4:4, HDCP2.2 (7 in / 2 out), HDR Video and BT.2020 pass-through. It also has Dolby Atmos & DTS:X.

Worth considering!

Cheers.  Atmos doesn't appeal to me at this point, but s tep up in power and from 5.1 to 7.1 would be great.

How advantageous is an Ethernet port? can I stream movies from my PC through this?

Was an early adopter of 7.1 but now on 5.1 (and will go Atmos one day). Don't miss 7.1.

Ethernet used for firmware updates, software Apps e.g. phone App, setups etc.  Easiest way from PC streaming to AVR is with HDMI. Or use a player that streams with HDMI output.

A 7.1 or even 6.1 adds value to the movie watching experience compared to a straight 5.1 setup. But it does depends on a number of factors including room size, walls and speakers. So one rule doesn't fit all.

I've tried Atmos & DTS:X using the Pioneer SP-T22A-LR (bouncy speakers) place on top of Front Left & Right Speakers. See:

https://www.pioneeraudio.com.au/products/sp-t22a-lr

It again adds value to the movie watching experience, But it does depends on a number of factors including room size, ceiling height and speakers.

Snoopy8 has answered some of this above. But download the manual and have a read because this RX-V1081 receiver does other a number of internet and streaming options.

If you are put off buy the courier costs from the east, perhaps you might have to find something in WA like this Yamaha RX-V3800. See:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-RX-V3800-Receiver/184162093448

Been for sale on eBay for a while. Last auction ended on 7th Feb and this current auction is due to end in about 13 minutes. Offers are being accepted

It has been relisted here:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Yamaha-RX-V3800-Receiver/184169787318

https://europe.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-v3800/downloads.html

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RXV3800/Yamaha-RX-V3800.html

The RX-V3900 you mentioned in your first post, was superseded by the RX-A3000 when Yamaha released the Aventage line of Receivers. The RX-A3000 was superseded by the RX-A3010 which the RX-V3071 mentioned above shares the same internals.

Here is a link about the difference between the RX-V3800  & RX-V3900. I'm not sure how accurate this information is.

https://www.avforums.com/threads/yamaha-rx-v-3800-vs-rx-v-3900.881138/

But you can compare them yourself using these two links:

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RXV3800/Yamaha-RX-V3800.html

https://www.crutchfield.com/p_022RXV3900/Yamaha-RX-V3900.html

But again if it was me I'd buy either the RX-V3071  or RX-V1081 and be happy paying the courier costs. But that's just me.

Another option is this Denon AVR-X3100W in Perth WA:

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Denon-AVR-X3100W-7-2-Channel-Integrated-Network-Receiver/133329339847

https://www.au.denon.com/au/product/hometheater/avreceivers/avrx3100w

Here is a comparison of the Yamaha Aventage RX-A3010 (RX-V3071) over Denon AVR-X3100W

https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/yamaha-rx-a3010/australia/denon-avr-x3100w/usa/

Here is a comparison of the Yamaha RX-A1060 (RX-V1081) over Denon AVR-X3100W

wouldn't say this in the full case for the RX-V1081

the Ethernet and Wifi are for the internet and LAN

this will give you the ability to upgrade the FW (as stated)

as the RX-V1081 has spoify, tidal, dezzer and airplay build in, you can stream straight from the AVR, no extra player needed

add a DNLA NAS anywhere in your network and stream/play your only music

also use the Yamaha app from phone/tablet (as stated)

you cant play video over the Eth/wifi, you do need an external source for this

these functions are what I miss the most on my new XMC-2

if the length was just 5cm shorter you could have sent it from Melbourne to Perth via Sendle (who use couriers please) for $30.95

Thats box is slightly too big for them.

I was going to double box it hence the larger stated dimensions

That will make a difference!

Well with those new measurements, looks like Sendle could be the way to go as the cost is only $30.95 for Check-in

Absolutely, the service is great and very reasonable but as you can see maxes out at around AVR box, no Post Office Queues, just collect and deliver!

Certainly an excellent  option if Jayson H is really interested in Hytram's RX-V1081, and I guess any other AV Receiver.

I'm assuming you are talking from personal experience and have used them yourself.

Thanks for the heads-up! ? ?

Currently I use a PC, with VLC Media Player, then via Wifi to Chromecast.

Due to the HDMI issues with the Onkyo, the Chromecase is plugged into the TV, then via Optical to the Onkyo.  Not the best solution, but the only one I have for now....

Would PC-Chromecast-AV receiver be the same as PC-AV Receiver  via ethernet?  or should I start a new thread on this topic?   ?
