Yep - long time user and Plex Pass owner. Have a rack mounted Intel i9 dedicated Plex server, hooked up to Synology rack mount NAS (32TB), feeding 7 x 4K clients (not all at one time of course).

Good to know I'm in good company. Certainly not the setup you have but it works.

What are you using Plex primarily for? Movies? Music?

Had a quick play around with Plex but my initial thoughts that it was better suited for movies. Similarly tried Kodi which also seems to be predominately aimed towards movies rather than music.

Anyone had much luck using Plex and/or Kodi with music... ideally with gaples playback and queuing of tracks?

As you suggest, I use Roon for Music, Plex for TV/Movies. Both do what they specialise in, better.

Plex recently added Tidal to its platform but I still prefer the two separate apps.

I have almost the same as Marc. A less powerful NAS but the same reasoning. I access over 2500 albums via Roon - most ripped form CD or transferred from vinyl over 12 years, a few dozen hires albums from HDTracks and the like. About 600 videos via Plex - most ripped form Bluray or DVD

Mix of both.
I have the odd issue with PLEX but mostly it works fine. For a free app. I'll stick to it

Same here, Plex pass sitting on DS918+ with 30TB WD red feeding 3 Sammy TV’s, easy to use, good interface and reliable, only for movies

Have youze guys with the 918+ NAS found it can manage as a Roon server as well as all its other tasks?  I'm considering getting one, mainly for backup storage, streaming movies to 2 tellies (no 4k tellies yet) and running about 6 cameras on Surveillance Station.....

If only Roon, like Plex, would allow for users to stream their own libraries remotely.

I must admit I have wanted that feature on more than one occasion.

I'm a Plex Pass owner running it on a Synology DS1813+. It is a little quirky and doesn't cope well with "doing things my way versus its way". But, it is pretty good for free, or even the Plex Pass cost.

Does plex direct play the movies? So that no quality is loss?

There are 2 ways to play via plex. the app installed to TV which goes out via the interface through the net then back (I believe)
Or direct via DLNA from the PC but still via plex

Ok thanks. Do either way lose quality compared to full BD copy?

If you have the network bandwidth and enough chops on your server to handle the transcoding (if their device doesn't support direct stream) it's a nice way to share your content and it's free.  Also handy to stream direct to your car/phone (think Android Auto) so you have access to your music and movies everywhere.

I also use PLEX for all my photos. I have been looking for a way to have easy access to all my digital pics; iCloud was too expensive and I don’t trust google.

I bought a NUC on SNA copied my pics to the HDD and now I can access them all on multiple devices, TV’s, even remotely over the internet. It’s not as fancy as google pics but it preserves our privacy and works great. Often I set our two TV’s to shuffle through our pics in different rooms. I just leave them going, it’s great to see the pics of the kids when they were young.

Plex user here from right back at the start when they were mac only. Bought a lifetime plex pass right back when they first offered it too.

Now I have a dual socket Xeon server with 60TB of (almost full) storage running Unraid and serving full 4K UHD disk rips to multiple screens at once over a unifi network system and streaming high bitrates to family around the country, they can make requests to the system too via an app and the server automatically obtains it (obviously by asking me kindly to buy the disk... of course!)

It also has a huge library of music on it, much of which is 24 bit, some DVD-A rips and such, bit perfect playback on my main system and automatic transcoding streams nice quality to my phone in Android Auto when i'm road tripping.

Software wise, they have had their ups and downs, but boy is it working sweet now.
