Receiver mainly for Movies around $2000

Recommended Posts

Hey Folks!!!

What do u suggest for a 5.1.4 setup a AV receiver mainly going to be used for movies / TV in a mixed room setup. Was thinking Yamaha RX-A2080 but I know many other suggestions here..

I know Yamaha is running a promo where you can get these new close to $2100 (no need to give old amp) which ends this month. Good to grab it or something else? How often these deal come for Yamaha? I reckon this is so that they can clear out for new 2020 models (is there a general month they release new stuff every year?)

Denon I heard run hot.. I know NAD is famous here but not sure of model. Wasn't sure of Marantz either.

Cheers

cant see why you would consider the 2nd top yammy (2080 9 on board amps/9 channel processing) which is only a mid denon (3600 9 on board amps/11 channel processing and latest upmixers) recently around $1850 on special.

if going yammy better looking at excel hifi refurbished units 3080 around $1900, 2080 around $1700 when they have them.

Sorry you mean Yamaha 2080 was on special for $1850 or the Denon 3600?

the denon was $1850.. yammy refurbs are cheaper than the denon with half the yammy warranty.. except the A series they still get the first 12 months replacement warranty (but best to contact excel hifi to confirm)

Cool.. will check it out

Does it run hot?

I'm currently watching Black Panther at my normal Movie volume which is pretty loud powering a 5.1.4 system and just felt the top of the receiver, and it's easily touchable. The hottest part is marginally warmer than luke warm, and i'm easily able to hold my hand on it, and my living room is currently around 28 celcius so it definitely doesn't feel like it' running hot considering the circumstances.

That's my unscientific take LOL.

I just purchased a Yamaha RX-V 2085 from Eastwood HI Fi for $1990 delivered to Qld, it also included a couple of HDMI cables in the deal. Went the Yamaha route for two reasons, firstly this will be my third Yammie Avr, I upgrade every 7 years or so, and never had a problem with any of the units, fact is the first one is still being used daily hooked up to  a computer. Secondly the Yamaha was the only one with DAB+ tuner, I already have a stand alone Tuner but want to cull the number of boxes on the rack. Will keep the RX-V 2067 for man cave duties

If anyone is interested, Excel HiFi have the Yamaha RX-V3085 for $1650 on eBay. eBay have an additional $49.50 discount using Pool3. So $1600.50 with free delivery. See:

What's the difference between V3085 and A2080/3080 .. Couldn't see V3085 on Aus Website

Worth going for it? and refurb?

I personally don't have any experience with the Yamaha 85 Series such as the RX-V3085. I did purchase a Refurb Yamaha RX-A3080 directly from the Excel HiFi Web site and have been very happy with it. But you are right, for some reason the Australian Yamaha site doesn't listed the RX-V3085.

https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/85/index.html?gclid=Cj0KCQiAsbrxBRDpARIsAAnnz_NpJ91ftktAcJCog-6Nx4ddQFQY2NEOg00DutVaNVhj7Sps3VCfO0MaAoRlEALw_wcB

But Yamaha Australia does sell them in Australia and Excel HiFi is an authorised Yamaha Dealer like say Eastwood HiFi.

Perhaps have a read of this thread called "Yamaha receivers - difference btwn A and V series?":

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9j0llzq9

I was going to buy a RX-V3085 but saw the Refurb RX-A3080 on the Excel HiFi site and it only $1899. So I purchased that instead.

Just always vary about refurbs and stuff..

Well congrats on your purchase! I'm sure you won't be disappointed. I'm very happy with our Refurb RX-A3080. You certainly can't complain about the price. ?

This seems to be the comparison what I was thinking of getting v/s what I got

https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/yamaha-rx-a2080/australia/yamaha-rx-v3085/australia/

I am hoping V3085 gets all firmware updates and stuff.. Should I also care if neither had

No Front Wide Channel Support
No Dolby Atmos Height Virtualization
No DTS Virtual:X
No IMAX Enhanced
No Auro 3D with Auro-Matic Upmixer
No MHL Input
No FireConnect
No FlareConnect
No Chromecast Built-In
No DTS Play-Fi
Does Not Work with SONOS
No Multi-Channel Input
No Pandora

Should I care about any of these?

only if you would use them.. every new release has something extra but doesnt mean you will miss out.

its main function is to provide sound thru your speakers/sub.. that sound should be the main concern imo.

as for the 3085 vs the 3080 (or any rxv model vs equivalent rxa model) . have never found/seen any measured/bench test comparison.. wonder why

who cares about this stuff.. really

The RX-V2085 is the cheaper version of the RX-A2080.

The Firmware is the same around the RX-A1080/RX-V1085/RX-A2080/RX-V2085/RX-A3080/RX-V3085 range of Yamaha models. See:

Firmware update Doco here:

Regarding the setup of your new RX-V3085 Receiver. You can use the excellent Yamaha app for Apple IOS or Android which provides full control of all features etc.

You can also setup your new RX-V3085 using the web page access.  You simply use the settings button on the remote to find your receiver's IP address. You can then access the setup via a web browser with the following URL:

IP Address/Setup/index.html

Depends on your room and sources that may well duplicate these to an extent - plug a chromecast into your tv if it doesn't have a streaming app built in ..

Front wides depends on your room width and the discs you buy having wide object metadata- pretty rare with pre rendered 7.1.4 pinned soundtracks..

Imax enhanced may well be a flop ; dts-x pro is more important to expand channels to more than 7.1.4

Auro 3d is a codec that is very rare on uhd sources ;dts and dolby are giants in comparison . Auromatic is a good dsp upmixer but yammies have many other such options you may prefer.

If you have Sonos that makes yams musicast redundant as both do similar multi zones - your choice - a lot like sonos :)

Multichannel inputs are redundant now we can stream all manner of bitstreams digitally without extra adc/dac conversions

Pandora can be found on many bd players B) Generally as you go up to more expensive ce's a lot of the bells and whistles gives way to sound quality and brands don't update with new ''features" every year .
