Reason for selling: Upgraded to a brighter model (HD6K)
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
Extra Info:

This is a rare opportunity to have such a great projector, way way way better than those sub-10 thousand 4K consumer ones. It is a huge sized projector, weight 34kg without lens and the lens is another 5 or more kgs. RRP around $50000 USD for the projector and $6000 for the lens! It's over 100,000 AUD totally when it was new.

https://www.christiedigital.com/en-us/3d/products-and-solutions/projectors/mirage-HD3-3D-Stereoscopic-Projector

Selling due to I find a 6000lm HD6K is better fit for my 175 inch screen. Although when use this HD3 for 175 inches, the image, the brightness is already way better than any consumer projector, I feel it will be perfect for 150 inch or so.

It use 3DLP chips, it's 3X0.95 inch DLP chips. Now a days new 4K DLP projectors are using single 0.47 inch (physical resolution 1080p, yet shift to 4K) and 0.66 inch (premium models with 25XX resolution shift to 4K). So it's like consumer cheap camera VS professional DSLR, even consumer ones got more pixels, it can not compare with professional DSLR with prime lens. With 3DLP chips, there's no color wheels so no rainbow effects.

The lens is a fixed 1.1:1 (HD) short through lens which can do 150 inches with 4M distance. The lens is massive and very heavy. It has some chips yet there's no visible impact to the image. I have another same model lens without any chip yet can't tell difference when I swap lens.

It's using 500W Xenon bulb. Which Xenon ones have best spectrum that close to sunlight. So it's not like other UHT lamp or LED or laser that certain color is weaker on spectrum that you need to calibrate the project to have accurate color while it's a lot dim than advertised. Xenon bulb projectors has no such issues and color is the best even better than latest top end LED/laser projectors.

The projector is around 3290 hours and lamp is 495 hours (1500hours life, if you adjust to lower power such as 350 or 400W, the bulb will have longer life)

Pros:

  • Best color I've ever seen! Very rich, dynamic image. It's not like lots of 4K projectors that the image is 'flat'. This one the image gives you 3D feels. It's like a highend plasma VS  cheap LCD TV. The color, the brightness is better than movie theaters.
  • Great contrast
  • Crystal clear. Resolution wise it's not 4K, yet I guarantee you'll find it's more 'clear' than normal 4K projectors
  • Very bright, best on a 133-150 inch and will still be good on 180 inch screens.
  • Massive sized short throw lens gives you chance to project very large image. (1.1:1 lens)
  • It supports 3D, yet it's frame to frame 3D format that you'll need to have some other video processor to convert from generic BluRay. Yet I've heard someone did it and find the 3D is way way way better than any other projector or the cinemas.

Cons:

  • Very loud - fan noise around 60DB. Better to build a 'hush box' (which I'll build one in near future). However for the image quality, I can bear with the noise actually.
  • 500W Xenon bulb - can adjust between 350W to 500W yet it use more electricity than normal projectors.
  • Lens got some chips, however there's no visible impact to the image.
  • Xenon bulb is expensive.

This projector is for enthusiasts, for those who really want to be moved by the image, and can live with the cons come with the projector.

Photos: Photos can not justify how great the image is as my camera is not good enough to have grey levels to show all the details.

How much are the replacement bulbs, and does it support HDR at 1080P?

I'd spare 500 to 1000 for the bulb. For example, this brand new one is sub $600.

https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Christie-003-120118-01-Replacement-Lamp-Housing-Kit-500-Watt-New-Spare/174121045066?hash=item288a6c4c4a:g:rl8AAOSwpb1d8Rzs

Basically 50c to $1 for an hour of bulb life. Which is still fine to me as if you buy a $20000 projector, after 5 years, what's the value of it still left?

It does not support HDR, yet I've heard people had chance watched 1080p 3DLP then straight away sell their brand new $20000 SONY 4K projector. Personally I have not had chance to see image from $10000 4K projector, but I heard the image is too 'flat' compare to a 3DLP. While 3DLP + Xenon light gives you 3 dimensional feel of the image.

I think to put it in this way. Like HT sound system, this is a hi-end 5.1 system VS 'cheap' soundbar or 7.1.2 which supports latest DolbyAtmos etc.

BTW, shipping to Melbourne will be around $300. Yet preferably pick up as then you'll be able to see the amazing image by yourself before buying.

I can also provide some tech support later on if you have any questions since I'm using another very similar model (HD6K) in my house.

Hello Tom,

I am using a Wolf Cinema DCX 1000i, which is apparently a hot-rodded Christie HD6. I agree with all your comments regarding the 3 chip DLP xenon-lamped Christies, although I have not compared with consumer level 4K. They are an astounding value for money in the second hand market, and with a bit of detective work, replacement lamps can be found at a somewhat reasonable cost.

As you also mentioned, fan noise can be a con. In my case, even more so as Wolf Cinema add additional inlet and exhaust fans and ducting! I am in the process of soffit mounting which will be virtually silent. A hush box is an achievable DIY project for the new owner.

I felt I was taking a bit of a punt buying such a big, commercial offering to replace my JVC HD350, but it was an immense leap up in quality, and I'm sure the buyer of your projector will not regret the purchase....good luck with the sale!

Regards,

Phil

Thanks Phil,

Indeed! I'm so impressed at the image the HD3/HD6K provides, it blows my old 3DLP 720P RUNCO VX2C away by miles! The Wolf 1000i was $85000 USD when it was new! I'm glad in Australia we do have some enthusiasts that enjoys the Xenon 3DLP projector.

Have you tried 3D movies? I heard the 3D from Xenon 3DLP is better than most theaters.

Cheers

Tom

Hello Tom,

I bought my projector in similar circumstances to what your purchaser will be doing; pre-owned at orders of magnitude less than new retail! The original owner had apparently spent $350 000 on his Home Theatre room, then the new owner gutted it to convert it into a games/theatre room. Ah, the rich....

I haven't done anything about 3D, though with the ridiculous headroom that a Xenon bulb provides, should be a great candidate for it. Maybe one day. I use an HTPC with MadVR, and downscale 4K to good effect however....something else your buyer could bear in mind.

At the risk of going off-thread, could you do me a favour? With the fans/ducting I have installed, I am getting about 50 degrees celsius on the 4 internal temperature points; I imagine yours would run similarly to mine....could you check those and let me know? I just want to ensure that my cooling is adequate or whether I need to bump up the airflow. PM is fine if you prefer

Thanks and regards,

Phil

Hi Phil,

Not a problem.

Lucky for you to get such a great projector in a friction of list price!

I feel like MadVR to downscale 4K will be heavy on computer resources. What's your PC setup? processor/video card (not sure if HW accelerated video cards is a must)

What's your screen setup? I'm on 175 inch white wall (with British Paint ceiling paint) seems pretty decent. Not sure how better it can go on a professional screen material.

For the fans, can you post photos on your setup? I'm yet to build the noise isolation box as I've been busy laying floor planks and upgrading my sound system in the recent. Will surely share the result once it's been built.

To me, if inside the projector housing, 50 degrees sounds fine. The exhaust of the HD3 is just warm yet on HD6K it's really hot. I mean even hotter than a heater vent.

Post here or PM both fine for me :)

Cheers

Tom

Yesterday I downloaded some 4K sample videos and used my desktop to play them out on the projector. The images are breathtaking! It's like watching hi-end 4K TV image on 4 times the size of the largest oled TVs. (Those shots are taken by iphone7 without any modification. The actual image is around 10% less contrast that the black level is not as good as on the photos, yet still great enough). Anyone who watches what the actual image on 175 inches will surely find this price is a steal for the quality of what it can deliver.

From now on, I'll focus on UHD 4K instead of playing bluray on this 1080p projector. I didn't expect 4K material actually improves image quality/details so much on a 1080p projector.

I'm confident to say, no other type of projectors (less than $30,000) can provide such brightness and density of this vivid color as for this 3DLP Xenon light projector. Hi end JVC will have better black level with less brightness which suits smaller screen.
