I have to replace my Yamaha A2000 under insurance, new for old. It would be nice if the new RX-A6 was available but now. Enquiries around town tell me that the new series will not be available until May. In the meantime Yamaha is making some more of the old series.

Waiting is possible, but in the meantime the sound levels will be very quiet! I hope that the repairs at home will be done by the end of the month and we can move back in. It would be a long wait and after a brief and confusing look I do not see another brand in the similar price bracket that is much better than the RX-A2080 which is the direct insurance replacement. Any ideas?.

I'm posting this info regarding how to get the new Yamaha HDMI 2.1 AVR's to display the exact digital audio stream it is receiving from a source. A new owner asked how to do this in a thread on the new Yamaha HDMI 2.1 over on Whirlpool here:

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/35q8l8n3?p=27#r533

I thought I would post the solution here in the hope it might help other new owners.

While on the source, if you click in and spin the small knob on the right of the front panel clockwise, you can show the audio decoder display underneath the source name and see what the AVR is getting from the source. See:

RX-V6A Manual: Selecting the input information displayed on the front display:

https://manual.yamaha.com/av/20/rxv6a/en-US/316307979.html

RX-A2A Manual: Selecting the input information displayed on the front display

https://manual.yamaha.com/av/20/rxa2a/en-US/316307979.html

How to setup this as a function on the YELLOW/BLUE keys on the remote control

If you go into the Menu: 'Setup > Function > User Interface > Remote Colour Key', then use the left or right keys to change the 'Key Assign' to "<Display Control>", you will find the yellow and blue buttons will do the same as turning the small knob left or right and you can cycle through the display options for Decoder/Channel Output, etc. This will save you from having do this with the knob on the front of the receiver as detailed above.

RX-V6A Manual "RED/GREEN/YELLOW/BLUE keys on the remote control":

https://manual.yamaha.com/av/20/rxv6a/en-US/318773515.html

RX-A2A Manual "RED/GREEN/YELLOW/BLUE keys on the remote control":

https://manual.yamaha.com/av/20/rxa2a/en-US/318773515.html

On the previous non HDMI 2.1 Yamaha models the receiver wouldn't display the exact digital audio stream it is receiving from a source, but only show "SUR.DECODER"..... no "DOLBY ATMOS OR DTS X or other content. See this thread on Whirlpool for the solution. See:

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/9j0llzq9?p=30#r587

I'm gonna wait for the higher end models though

If thats the case Mullins ; Ide consider the new Pioneers or even Onkyos'  . Apart from the superior dirac live over YPAO or MCACC  they will be using a competitor chipset to the panasonic chipset the yammies need to have fixed for 120hz game playback ..

Depends on how easy you want setup to be though ; there will be easy and then better with a calibrated mike . Of course things are moving slower now with covid and chipset factory fires like AKM just experienced :/

The first of the new Aventage Series, the RX-A2A is now available in Australia at retailers. The RX-A2A is now on the Australian Yamaha Site. See:

https://au.yamaha.com/en/products/audio_visual/av_receivers_amps/rx-a2a/index.html

But still says that it is coming, which it already has as some people have already purchased the RX-A2A here in Australia. A google search will show retailers who have it in stock or are getting stock.

Here is a features comparison between the RX-A2A & RX-V6A. See:

https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/yamaha-rx-a2a/australia/yamaha-rx-v6a/australia/

Differences:

RX-A2A has flat front fascia, detachable power cord, A.R.T. Wedge and 4 years warranty, while the RX-V6A has rounded front fascia, 2 years warranty.

RX-A2A is 10.2 kg, while the RX-V6A is 9.8 kg.

The external casing of the RX-A2A is thicker than the RX-V6A. A comparison of the back panel shows that the side and top casings of the RX-A2A is much thicker and deeper than the RX-V6A.

The feet of the RX-A2A are different and features dampening materials.

The filter capacitors in RX-A2A are rated at 10,000uF while RX-V6A are rated  at 8,200uF. So the RX-A2A will have extra punch and power at higher volume due to the larger capacitor.

RXA2A has IR in / out (3.5mm)

Remote control on the RX-A2A is different to the remote of the RX-V6A & RX-V4A.

Here is a Yamaha AVENTAGE RX-A2 review showing the RX-A2A side by side with the RX-V6A. They remove the side and top cases.

Has anyone bought an RX-V6A and can comment on how it sounds? I'm thinking of replacing a Denon AVR-1910 which still sounds absolutely fine but doesn't have 4k pass-through or any streaming services. It would just be for a 3.1 setup in my living room.

Perhaps post this question over on Whirlpool in the 2020 Yamaha AVRs with HDMI 2.1 thread here:

https://forums.whirlpool.net.au/thread/35q8l8n3?p=41

There are a number of new owners of RX-A2A, RX-V6A & RX-V4A who have posted in this thread and I'm sure that will respond to your question. 🙂

Interesting path bizzibee ; they seem happy with 7.1.4 still with there dsp modes stacked on top of the standard atmos or dts-x .. Have certainly seen how popular auro 3d is as an upmixer  but does it have a separate voice of god channel ? only up to 11.1 it looks like ..

Good to see they have sorted out the 4k120hz snafu for the top of the line ; as firmware upgrades are listed for hdmi2.1 and auro3d incorporation as well :) Better than a trip back to the factory .

As  reported by zzzyz36 over on WP regarding how Yamaha plans to address the 4K/120Hz (4K120AB) or 8K/60Hz (8K60B) transmission to the RX-V6A and RX-V4A & RX-A2A be extension.

Got this from Yamaha, confirms V6A will never support the full HDMI specification without a hardware update.

I will see what they announce in the next month or so then decide how to proceed to get an AVR that actually supports HDMI 2.1 in full.

We appreciate your concern regarding the HDMI 2.1 compatibility of the RX-V6A and apologise for any inconvenience. I can assure you that a solution for our customers affected by the specific combination of the Xbox Series X and NVIDIA RTX30 with the RX-V6A is a high priority and as such, please see the latest update below relating to this issue.

From the time we launched several AV receivers in 2020, we stated that we would support emerging HDMI 2.1 capabilities – including pass-through of 4K/120Hz (4K120AB) or 8K/60Hz (8K60B) signals via future updates. A future hardware update is required on the RX-V6A only if you plan to connect Xbox Series X and NVIDIA RTX30 at 4K/120Hz (4K120AB) or 8K/60Hz (8K60B) transmission to the RX-V6A.

• For most source devices outputting a 4k/120AB signal, only a simple firmware upgrade will be required which is on track for release in the second half of 2021
• The RX-V6A currently supports HDMI pass-through of 4K/60Hz signals with HDR (HDR10 and Dolby Vision) and may be used with the latest gaming devices.
• The RX-V6A also currently supports HDMI eARC, which allows 4K/120Hz sources to be connected directly to a compatible TV, with the audio fed to the AVR via eARC.

We hope to have a further update in relation to this issue by the end of the month, which will be posted through the below link. This is where you will find the most reliable information in respect of this issue.

We really need to know what Yamaha's plan is regarding the existing RX-V4A, RX-V6A & RX-A2A. It is all a bit of conjecture at the moment. Yamaha may option to replacement the mainboard in the existiing RX-V4A, RX-V6A & RX-A2A already sold. I can't see them doing what Denon has done because the RX-V4A, RX-V6A & RX-A2A all suport more than one HDMI 2.1 inputs.

Anyway time will reveal all I guess.

Yamaha must have a workable chipset in the new RX-A4A, RX-A6A & RX-A8A that only require

People seem to continue to quote this:

RX-A8 (11 channels) = successor of the RX-A3080
RX-A6 (9 channels) = successor of the RX-A2080
RX-A4 (7 channels) = successor of the RX-A1080
RX-A2 (7 channels) = successor of the RX-A880
RX-V6 (7 channels) = successor of the RX-V685
RX-V4 (5 channels) = successor of the RX-V485

Taken from:

https://www.avsforum.com/threads/yamaha-aventage-rx-a8-rx-a6-rx-a4-rx-a2-new-2020-2021-models.3115936/post-60140354

But I believe this is closer to the truth.

RX-A8 (11 Amplified Channels) = Completely new model 11 Amplified Channels
RX-A6 (9 Amplified Channels) = successor of the RX-A3080
RX-A4 (7 Amplified channels) = successor of the RX-A1080
RX-A2 (7 Amplified Channels) = successor of the RX-A880
RX-V6 (7 Amplified Channels) = successor of the RX-V685
RX-V4 (5 Amplified Channels) = successor of the RX-V485

The RX-A6A has both XLR inputs & XLR outputs. There are no XLR inputs or XLR outputs on the RX-A2080, so I can't see how it could be the replacement of the RX-A6A. The RX-A3080 has both XLR inputs & XLR outputs.

Also the RX-A3080 has both the ESS SABRE PRO ES9026PRO Ultra DAC and SABRE ES9007S DAC. The new RX-A6A also has that same ESS SABRE PRO ES9026PRO Ultra DAC and SABRE ES9007S DAC combo as the existing RX-A3080. The RX-A2080 only has ESS SABRE Premier DAC ES9007S x 2 . Same as the existing RX-A1080 and new RX-A4A.

I think that the RX-A8A will be targeting the Denon AVR-X6700, but at a lower price point. The RX-A8A has the ESS 384 kHz / 32-bit SABRE PRO Premier DAC ES9026PRO x 2 (for all channels incl. presence speakers) same as the existing CX-A5200 Pre-Pro. So what will the new Yamaha Pre-Pro look like I wonder.

Anyway, just my thoughts.

Its apparent that Yamaha has sourced a new non panasonic chipset for 8k and 120hz passthrough for the new advantages . This has parallels with the AKM fire and ce's switching dacs  ; the delays with the Anthem av90 for example..

As theres 3x 8k hdmi's theres no way around a new hdmi pcb hardware fix for xbox and nvidea  owners ; other 4k/120 and 8k sources will just need a new firmware as Yamaha answered to zzz36 above B)

Yamaha will be hoping that people will just settle for the firmware download i suspect if they dont have an xbox or pc nvidea card ; otherwise they may have a onkyo recall cost 😬

I was hoping for a bit more in terms of build quality and features in a flagship AV Receiver that is going to retails for around $6000, ie. should have 13 channels at that price, if this is what the Yamaha RX-A8A is going to be the Anthem MRX-1040 or Marantz SR8015 after the new 8k boards are integrated into these units would be my pick if in the market for a flagship AVR.

Lets see what is finally released and final retail.
