So my AT33 PTG which had strapped outputs for mono bit the dust. No warning, no accidents, it just broke at the level of the suspension on the other side of the plate that the cantilever inserts into. Very inconvenient.

Given I like playing my mono records in mono, and my phono amp

doesn’t have a mono switch, and summing the signal with Y Cables is inconvenient with balanced interconnects, a replacement cartridge was in order. I got in touch with @petng who was selling a shelter 501 ii mono, and in a very short time, I was in possession of a fully functioning mono playback system again. Happy days.

PS- yes that is a lump of blu-tac to add a gram or so’s weight to the cartridge/head shell to allow swapping with my stereo cartridges with minimal fuss.

Not exactly the same cartridge, but the XX2 and XV-1S are close enough to assess the differences. The Kuzma is much better, as you would expect. But the Rega is still a cracker of a turntable, particularly at the price. It is very musical and very dynamic, and I could easily live with it as my only turntable.

I went from a DV 20x2H to a XV-1s. Quite a leap in detail but there's definitely a family resemblance. Nice rigs you've got.

New Phono in the system Project Tube Box DS with external power supply, currently has Tung-Sol tubes insitu, a reasonable stepup from the old NAD PP2e, going through all the recently cleaned LP's.

Nice array of loading options.  :thumb:

I see you have 100 ohms selected - what cart are you using the Tube Box with?

Using an Ortofon Quintet Blue, says greater than 20 Ohm. In the manual for the phono stage, states for low output MC input capacitance is irrelevent, the sound does change as you turn the dial, 100 ohm strikes a nice balance

Yes, coil impedance is given as 7 ohms; sure, the specs say loading should be 20 ohms or more - but I'm not surprised you find a higher loading sounds better.  The fact that the Tube Box gives you quite a range enables you to find the sweet spot.  :thumb:

Absolutely correct!

Seems an odd thing to say. Getting the capacitance right can be make or break for a cartridge.

For a MM cart - yes, H.  Not a MC.

Nice Eamon. Congrats.

I enjoyed my time with the XP-25. The 27 should be a step up.

I would be putting the power supply as far away from the phono stage.

Cheers

I finally gave up on looking for a decent Phono Preamp with two MM inputs (why are these so few and far between?), or adding a suitable switch box to the lowly Cambridge Audio 540P I already had.

My previously unused Yamaha CR800 does the trick now. Tape out line goes straight to a line input on my amplifier. It has a quality MM Phono Preamp and two MM inputs so I can easily flick between either turntable. I also get a decent headphone amplifier and fantastic tuner thrown into the bargain.

I make a very good-sounding phono stage (my "Muse") which I can easily customise to allow for 2x MM inputs.

Please PM me if you'd like to audition it (though you'd have to pay for postage to you / back as I can't drop it over, unless you happen to live within a few kms of Richmond).

It would simplify your vinyl signal chain - and sound better!  :)

That is a cool looking cart, especially on that arm (what is it?). Very sleek and low profile, almost like the bonnet of a sports car!
