Audioholics tested the latest Yamahas with both XLR and unbalanced and the distortion you get with the unbalanced is extremely low. In fact the two outputs tested identical. You’d be hard pressed to better it.

An upgrade would be a receiver that has a fully balanced path but you’ll have to spend 2-4x as much as this receiver to get that. Receivers in this price range just convert to balanced at the last stage. 🙂

Anyway, excellent receiver. I have the 3020 and the 3080. The new Yamahas from the 3060 onwards sound much clearer than earlier generation ones due to amazing DACs, and 64bit YPAO allowing for much more precision and higher sampling rates to be sent to the DACs.

I have the 3070 connected to my PS Audio Stellar Gain which has a home theatre bypass. When switching to the Yamaha (HT bypass channel, RCA input) I'm getting a bit of a pop/thump. Perhaps a build up of DC voltage or leakage? I'm theorizing whether utilising balanced XLR inputs to the Stellar Gain will eliminate or minimise the thuds when switching input...

That is interesting! I would contact Yamaha. I never experienced such a thing in the RCA pre-outs!

Alternatively, I would try switching cables as a first thing to eliminate?

Yep, tried 3 different RCA's ... all do it. I think it's the Stellar Gain more-so than the Yamaha now...

That was my thoughts as well. Good to see you have removed the listing for your Yamaha RX-A3070 until you confirm either way. If this was a systemic issue with the balanced and unbalanced outputs on the RX-A3070, surely it would have been highlighted long before now. There are a lot of Owners of the RX-A3070 across the world using the balanced and unbalanced outputs of the RX-A3070. So my thoughts are there is either an issue with the balanced and unbalanced outputs of your particular RX-A3070 or the balanced and unbalanced inputs of your particular PS Audio Stellar Gain.
