Dac. Denafrips Ares 2 or Schiit Yggdrasil

Recommended Posts

Greetings..

Planning to buy a good Dac.  My priorities are sound clarity, details and tight bass etc.  Good reviews on Schiit Yggy and Denafrips Ares 2.  Actually Dena is only half price of Yggy. So normally more interested in Dena Ares 2. Anybody in the Forum experienced to say on these two.  Please share your valuable opinions.  Thanks for your time.

Regards/ PG

Schiit Yggy is 3 x the price of Ares 2, Denafrips Venus is price comparable to Yggy.

Ares 2 is receiving positive reviews on SNA forums atm.

Contact @Dacman, if you are local he may be able to set you up with a demo of the Ares 2, he is the Aus distributor. I bought a Kinki Studio Vision Dac1 from him, great guy to deal with.

Good luck with your search 👍

Thanks Muzza. I am in Kuwait so demo is not practical.  Anyhow I will communicate with him to know more on Ares2.

by the way how is your kinki Dac. Is it better than Dena or schiit. As a owner of kinki Dac, I wish to hear from you the real opinion.

Kind regards

PG

No probs PG.

The Kinki is just great. Depending on source material it provides a nice soundstage with good depth/height and separation of instruments, which for me is an important part of what I find so enjoyable in listening to music.

Ares II user here and very very happy. Also have an Oppo 205 that has the ESS premium Sabre chipset.  Different sounds, Ares II very analog, warmer DAC where the ESS is more revealing.  I would not say there are greater levels of retrieval but the Oppo has a tendency to produce more analytical sound where the Ares II will get your toes tapping quicker.  I use them for different genres.

Also, keep in mind, the Schiit is a OS DAC where the Ares II you can option between NOS and OS as well fast and slow filter BUT they run different technologies with the Schiit being delta sigma and the Denafrips being R2R.  I'd encourage a bit of reading to maybe see which one is to your preferences then listen also.  Definately contact @Dacman, I found him a great bloke and will assist you with Denafrips products through the range.

As said above the Schiit is more expensive than the Ares II, the Venus or maybe even Pontus might be worthy your attention too.  That said, Giesler also are well regarded on SnA and I believe utilise AKM chips were are known for a sweet sound reproduction, they too will be in your price range based on the Schiit....

Also, If you want to look at something in the middle of the two prices suss out the RME ADI 2. It gets very well reviewed and might be something of interest to you with plethora of function adjustability.

There have been some Schiit Yggy in the classifieds of late too, some at bargain prices.  You could probably get the Ares II and the Ygggy for the price of a new Yggy if your patient!

cheers.

Thanks 08boss. Very much informative.  I am not in hurry.. am patient.. good used one will come at bargain price as you said. I think R2R technology is better than sigma. Anyhow thanks for your time for a detailed advise.

regards

PG

IMHO Pure Audio Lotus 5 beats all DACS at any where near it's price range. It uses ESS 3098 Pro chips and is revealing but not overly analytical and it really gets you closer to the music than any DAC I have heard.

These are the same chips the Oppo 205 uses in its audio section, the Oppo runs dual the chips also.  Of course using the same chips doesnt mean you get the exact same sound but I do agree, they are revealing, not in a cold stark way but my experience is definately on the analytical side as opposed to the sound of the R2R structure of the Danafrips or even the burr brown chips in my streamer (but I wouldnt put the latters performance in the same catagory as the others).

If the OP is after a warmer or sweeter analog sound not sure these chips will provide what he's after, but only the OP can come to that conclusion after some research and listening.  I find myself using both DACs for differing types of music and enjoying both.  Could I live with one or either...Yes, no issue at all, which one....that I am not sure LOL

I guess it depends on the rest of the system. My comments are based on use with  tube pre and power amps and a tube CD player and the match with the Pure Audio Labs Lotus 5 is to my ears close to ideal.
