AM Tonearm troubleshooting UPDATE

Recommended Posts

After a small hiatus I’m back to sorting out this blasted tonearm..

Here’s a video showing some curious bearing behaviour (at least that’s what I would guess):

Could my adjustment of the arm, fitting the cart and so on have tightened the hearing? I’ve just tried loosening the top screws on bearing for the current video.

Bearing is rooted or wires are catching.

The bearing adjustment is at the bottom of the arm.

Cheers. Could you give some more details about the bearing adjustment point? Note sure where that is.

Hoping it's not the wires as they were professionally done and I've hardly used it since that was done ~2 months ago.

For the time being I've rotated the arm towards the platter so that the 'catching' part of the arm swing would occur after the spindle, i.e., it doesn't affect playback now. Temporary fix however.

You can’t adjust a rooted bearing. I mentioned the adjuster to indicate you are not adjusting the correct adjuster in any case.

If it worked before the wiring was done send it back and get whoever did the wiring to fix it.

I’m assuming it’s nothing obvious like the arm tube grabbing the arm rest.

Looks like wire interference to me  - seem to recall another TT I had a while back did almost the same thing

And found out later that it was the tonearm wires kinking and releasing at the exit point underneath

Well that’s not the outcome I was after :(

Not going to name names but it’ll be a long round trip to get it redone..

Just pull off the bottom cover

You will be able to observe and confirm if that is the cause ( nothing can be harmed by doing this action )

If you are not confident to do that - What part of Brisbane are you from ?
And if you are close to me I can have a look and determine the cause for you

Appreciated - West of Brissy.

Will pull the black cap sealing the bottom tonight and see what’s going on in there

Have contacted the fellow who rewired it - good and bad news. Reckons it is the second option you mentioned: a shot bearing. Waiting to hear back from Jeff also

(Didn't manage to check out underneath last night... I was seduced into listening after getting home from work 😅)

Don’t we all 🎶

Post your vinyl listening sessions on the record currently spinning thread

An update, sending the arm back overseas to get the shot bearings fixed. Both the fellow who rewired it and the designer have been more than cooperative and kind in sorting this out as affordably as possible.

(Only downside is it will be at least a month until I can post in Currently Spinning ;) )
