emesbee
The Yaybahar, an instrument invented by Turkish musician Görkem Şen. Irish singer Muireann Nic Amhlaoibh made use of one of these on her latest album Thar Toinn (Seaborne). The one on her album was built and played by Billy Mag Fhloinn and was based on Görkem Şen's concept.
emesbee
The Beam, used on the soundtrack of the move Chronos. And The Blaster Beam, used on the soundtrack of some of the Star Trek movies. These look to be more or less the same thing, or at least based on the same concept. (I don't really know the origin and history of The Beam instrument.)

LHC
It may be incorrect to call the veena an unusual instrument as it has a long history in India. It is certainly exotic. 3
