DAC for 2.0

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I want to watch UHD movies through my stereo setup.

TV to be connected to the DAC via Toslink.

Is the Topping D30 good enough for this? Any other budget recommendations will be apreciated.

Cheers.

Are you sure this DAC can down convert multi channel into 2 channel. Usually you need a AV processor to do this task.

He didn't say anything about downmixing? He just said tv, stereo, and toslink.

Typically UHD movies don’t come with a 2 channel soundtrack.

Unless the tv can down convert……………………

Most will convert to pcm,  via the toshlink out in the audio settings...standard stuff.

I don't know how you plan to set this up, but I would try to hook up the Topping to your UHD player if you can, and just set the settings in your player to Stereo.

Running it via your TV wouldn't be my first option, unless you use your TV as UHD player.

I received the DAC about a week and a half ago.

I have it set up via a toslink cable from my TV, then onto my Marantz PM8005 and Monitor Audio Silver 6 speakers.

This is my first DAC and I'm really impressed with the sound quality considering its price. It's not bright or shrill. Bass extension is good. Neutral sounding in my opinion. Watching movies or music clips on on YouTube is in no way fatiguing to my ears, even at high volume.

Just out of curiosity, what is the advantage to connecting the DAC directly to the UHD player? Sound quality?

Anything related to sound on a TV is very low on the list of interest for TV manufacturers. So they will never use good parts.

There is a chance that your TV will not accept an LPCM signal to begin with, but only Dolby Digital, and if it does accept LPCM, there is a fair chance it will convert the signal to an AC3/ Dolby Digital lossy signal via Toslink.

Long story short, you don't have any control over the quality of the signal and how it is being treated.

Yes.   If you connect your DAC between your UHD player and amplifier  (rather than connecting the analogue outputs of the UHD player directly to the amplifier) .... then you might get better sound quality.

Not sure what I am missing?

Player HDMI TV Toslink DAC

Edit: Except, since it is working the DAC must receive a PCM signal, as it can't handle AC/Dolby.

The DAC works as intended. It's that easy.

Even a spaz like me can work it out.

Sounds great. Been using it with a basic Sony CD player and it really improves the sound stage (to my ears).
That CD player gave up the ghost and I've got my eyes on adding a decent CD player, so this has become surplus.
Also looks great on a shagpile rug.

I love this Oppo HA-2, but after some other purchasing on here, I need to sell some of the things I'm no longer using. You can connect in via iOS based device, USB Micro-B (Android with OTG / PC / Mac) or line-in, and then output to headphones. It has a built in battery that can keep itself charged, but also act like a portable battery to charge devices on the go. And, from a design perspective, I think it looks amazing.

Note that the USB cable included with this is not the one it came with I suspect, but has been tested and confirmed to charge the unit.

Excellent DAC which some have said keeps up with much more expensive ones. I've been very happy using it in a headphone setup with a ZMF Vérité Open and Asgard 3. This has been one of my favourite headphone combos. It's also desktop sized which is very useful.

See impressions at, eg, https://www.head-fi.org/threads/schiit-audio-bifrost-2.914084/, https://www.superbestaudiofriends.org/index.php?threads/schiit-bifrost-2.8226/

Has been used for 200 hours at most. Comes with all original packaging and receipt. If you purchase with the Asgard 3 (also pictured and for sale), I will throw in the Schiit Pyst RCA cables I purchased with them. Current price to buy locally is $1600 (a bit cheaper from Schiit but still around $1200 depending on the shipping option and when you add GST).

Only issue is that I currently cannot find the remote that came with it. I will update if I locate it. The remote is mostly used to change inputs (there is no volume control on the DAC) so I didn't find it especially useful.
