Stax Speakers

Mach13, I will be very interested to see how you go with these speakers . I hope you post future updates .

I owned F83s ( not 81s ) a longtime ago. For me they werent a great success.  They had little ( no) bass and wouldnt play at any reasonable volume ( mid 80 db C weighted at listening position ).

I tried for a while to add ( not sub ) woofers but in those days we didnt have the tools to facilitate this that are so readily available now.

I believe  RELs are designed to add to a main system without high passing the main speakers. Its hard to imagine this working with these speakers which dont appear to have the displacement necessary to allow bass reproduction. To me they need stereo woofers not a mono sub woofer (s.)

Hopefully things will work out better for you.

Cheers

Mike

Great speakers herd them at Encel stereo in the 80s with stax mono block amplifier and there stax  pro pre with a Linn sondeck lp player.very low efficiency and hard to drive. How much are they worth today,I wouldn’t know but wouldn’t be surprised if they are very  expensive. I heard some too at Encel in about '86. White cloth and quite tall (about 6'). They were marked down on sale but I can't remember if the sale price or the full price was about. $17,000. Great sound.

Better but its hard to see how any speaker with very limited overall output combined with significantly rolled off bass can reproduce  the correct balance for recordings made with the expectation they will be replayed at more normal but levels.

This may have been the ELS-8X?

Those Stax DA-100M mono block was actually design to drive the F81.

However there was an owner that had them and though that ran out of juice on higher volumes.

The owner stated that his Radford TT100 drove them the best.

https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/stax-stax-esl-f81-please-help

Another source state Radford STA25

https://www.stereo.net.au/forums/topic/122864-stax-electrostatic-speakers-amplifiers/page/2/

Looks like the Radford amp are ideal to drive the F81, however they are pretty hard to find.

Another amp that I'm sure can drive them is the Stax DMA-X2. Still going for 8k-11k in the used market oversea.

This is a serious amp, truely endgame stuff. Very rare

I've plug the the F81 up the PrimaLuna tonight and had a listen to a few tracks.

I've got the Prologue version which is like 50w with 4x KT150.

I think with a PrimaLuna dialogue premium with 8x KT150, 100w should be enough to drive them decently.

Reasonable loudness at 12 o'clock volume, didn't want to go further. The mid and high are smooth like velvet.

Surprisingly there is some bass, not a lot but ultra define.

After this experience, I'm converted. Stick to a decent tube amp & Stax makes incredible ****.

I've got other Stax gear like the SR-3, SR-5 Gold that are 40-50 years old that sound better than a lot of stuff nowadays.

#TubeBro #StaxBro

Till I get a better amp, I'll have plenty of time to enjoy the SR-007 & SR-009BK

They are great amplifiers. Expect to pay $3500+ and substantially more for the mono's!

Unobtainium alert! But by god do they look good. I'd be very, very surprised if there were anything of this calibre in Australia.

Left and right RC board and transformer.

There are signs of new solder joints and well as components changes.

2W resistors changed to 5w cement resistors.

10uF caps has been changed.

New binding post on both has been changed.

Black clothes is to new to be original, rear foam and metal mesh has been replaced.

The panels them self are in really good shape. Can't tell what else has been done.

Still trying to find out info from the person I got it from where or who serviced it.

I would strongly suggest returning them to their original state.

They are in great condition though by the photos! 👍

I got in contact with Kent McCollum from Electrostatic Solutions in US. He specialise in restoration for Quad & Stax ESL. He said that the original resistors are seriously under spec. Which can lead to damage to the panel and your amp. Advised to change them to 10w instead of the original 2w. Fuse need to be changed from 2A slow to 2A normal. All the work mentioned above was not done by me in the previous post.

The guy I work for, who also lives on the Gold Coast, has a pair of Stax panels and DA 100M mono blocks that he originally purchased new back in the 80’s, cost a absolute fortune back then. Since he moved a couple of years ago they now just sit in a spare room doing nothing.

The panels are massive timber things, from  memory they look like the ones in the photo above that ‘Be Quiet ... Listen’ shared.

If someone is interested I will find out what model they are and if he wants to sell them and the mono blocks.

cheers Terry

      Hi All.

For a while now I've been using a Stax SR-3030 set-up with my home office PC using normal audio out. The SR-3030 is a combination of the SRM-313 amp and the SR-303 earspeakers.

I recently purchased an Audioquest Dragonfly Black second-hand from the for sale section here at Stereonet to get better sound than the standard audio out jack.

When I plugged the Dragonfly in I thought it was a nice improvement so I've been experimenting a bit more.

I downloaded the demo version of Audirvana for Windows to give it a test. The combination sounded great -- far better than I expected.

Then I started reading about VST plugins with Audirvana and came across a plugin from ToneBoosters that offered equalisation for different headphones, including some Stax models. They don't have a profile for the SR-303s but do have one for the SR-404s which are very similar (in fact there was a lot of discussion whether they were different at all when they were released).

I must say, the combination sounds impressive for what is a fairly modest set-up. Very impressed with the sound of vocals, remarkable clarity and naturalness. The Stax headphones are doing their magic, but they need a good input to really sing and this combination is doing that:

Dell PC > Audirvana for Windows > ToneBoosters Morphit VST plugin  > Audioquest Dragonfly Black > Stax SR-3030 headphones

The Stax headphones aren't necessarily modest, but I did buy second hand so not hugely expensive.

The Morphit plugin has profiles for a lot of other headphones as well.

      Very happy indeed 🙂

      David.
