Guest deanB
6SN7; done right is usually (needless to say) extremely listenable. Is Don Sachs a New Yorker? Or am I thinking of a different boutique builder of preamplifiers. Ahh, from British Columbia. Apologies to Don! THOMO
All the best valve preamps I have heard have been hard wired not printed circuit board.
Sierra
Yes I am using this tube pre-amp. The design is actually by a guy called Roy Mottram owner of tubes4hifi based in Seattle. Don Sachs is a Harman Kardon Citation valve amp guru and over the last half a dozen years or so has been building and putting his own spin on Roy's pre-amp design. Below are the photos of my SP14 from Roy. I bought mine back in 2012 when Roy first came out with this design so I've had it for 7 years now and it has never missed a beat. And best of all it sounds divine. Bang for buck you can't go wrong with this pre-amp. Edited June 21, 2019 by Sierra
tuyen
Sierra is correct. It’s basically Roy’s sp14 unit with few upgraded parts and in a nice wooden enclosure. I believe Roy and Don are friends. The vta sp14 is one of the better tube preamps I’ve heard. Very well balanced sound. I like it so much I’m currently building one now with premium parts (ie Shinkoh/audionote resistors, film capped psu, etc.)

Tuyen has heard this and I am looking forward to comparing his later spec board with premium parts to mine. The comments on the Sach's version are very positive.

I got Roy to upspec a few of the components in mine when he was building it. Who knows ... one day I might try some Deulund output caps. Currently got the Mundorf Silver-in-oil M Caps and the Russian Paper-in-oil that I can switch between.

I'm not using the PH16 anymore and its just siting in the cupboard. If you want it happy to sell it.
