What source are you using?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I sold my Ak240 and I am unsure where to go next. I'm thinking of just using my phone as a source and buying a Mojo. Ultimately using this combo as my permanent solution.

What source are you guys using? I'm also considering buying the Astell and Kern Se100 to replace the Ak240.

I'm of the mindset of using a DAP as this would be a standalone solution.

I have two IEMs; Shure se846 and Andromeda Campfire and the Focal Clear.

Had a Mojo, sounded great.

not so great - carrying a dac/amp and it’s associated cables.

if portability is important, stick to a dap

I owned iBasso DX200, some AK players like AK70, AK300, quite a few DAPs over the years, iBasso DX90 is my pick, its the reason I sold my iBasso DX200.

I own two them and because the replaceable battery I've managed to keep them going way beyond a DAPs standard  lifespan.

I tried a few things but went simple as well.  Carrying an extra device around was not an option for me.  So I tried an Ultrasone NAOS DAC - which helped.  Then I tried a variety of music player apps and fiddled with all the settings (currently running Neutron) on my phone - they also helped.  Then I got myself some Westones and the world changed.  I forgot about the NAOS DAC, and right now, will listen to any app on my phone...spotify, regular google play or whatever, on their default settings.  It doesn't matter, I just LOVE the Westones.  Of course it's all personal but my lesson learned is that sometimes you just find the one component that makes all the difference - and in your case I suspect the thing to do is to have your ears tell you if you are going to get that step change moving from one DAP to another DAP (but maybe it's a different component you have to try)?

IBasso DX220 here.

I have a DX220 and AMP9 (want that tube sound with the Amp9) on order and will be using SE846.  Hopefully, my SE846 will pair well with it.

I have gone back to a Sony WM-1A with my Campfire Polaris 2 simply due to the awesome battery life.

I'm using the shanling up2. Solid unit and I think it drives plenty of power. Added bonus is it has a decent mic for taking calls.

Using it with andromedas and only get a buzz when on calls. Otherwise sounds clean.

Gym using Cowon Plenue D with Westone W30 IEMs

Portable is my Sony NW-A45 with Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro or the Westones.

At work, it's the Beyerdynamic's hooked into a NAOS DAC AMP hooked into laptop.

On occasion I'll use my iPhone 8+.. But I'm wary of the battery drain.
