Centre speaker

Yeah it's a worry but if it's really that bad I guess one could change it out.

this makes no sense.... especially it seems on a budget. its just wasting money to buy and change out ?

They seem quite expensive what they are on paper. Haven't had the opportunity to hear them much although I'm in Adelaide!

espesically with speakers you have to hear them ? :D

What do you have now?

focal electra centre prior to that paradigm which was awesome and richter before but really relevant ... should be looking at what is best for your setup rather than what am using ?

there are all sorts of setups out there... id be hesitant on just going on looks alone :)

Maybe I just go for the SVS Ultra while it's on sale. Never heard it though.

makes no sense if never heard ? how do you know like the sound of it or how matches in with rest of what got ?

This centre has seen two AVRs, it has performed exactly the same on both.

The AVRs have been fairly low end though. I really want another one when the new standards are a bit cheaper for 4K HDR 120hz etc.

that just tells me that likes is a candidate for attention. not only a more upmarket jobbie for better processing, but also consideration of amplification to help centre deliver. doesnt have to be expensive see quality amps going all the time for 100s of dollars... but again jumping gun. centre first ? then amp needed to drive so can best deliver...

Thanks for the replies so far. I'm definitely still poking around in low end stuff and have nowhere near the knowledge you guys have.

if wanting an upgrade am not sure poking around in low end stuff is going to get you there :) likely just end up with similar results than what have now ?

Yeah I know.

I need a centre now though.

I've put up with this one for 7 years and watch movies pretty much daily.

It has to get upgraded.

Yeah thats why sticking with Edward is my best choice.

Sorry the look of the speaker isn't the nicest and I don't have WAF so it doesn't matter too much anyway.

I like the look of the size, drivers used and tweeter arrangement.

Oh and the price lol.

I'm one for performance, looks come second.

I know, which is why I don't know about it lol. But I would most likely add the Ultra FL+FR if I did go down that route.

Yeah but I don't have tens of thousands of dollars for HT gear.

I wish I did, but I don't.

The AVR I have now is fine for it's duties. Does everything I need.

The AVR I have is not that old.

It's not getting upgraded for a few years.

It has plenty of power.

The problem is the centre speaker.

The centre speaker is a pile of junk -

The centre is not the first component in the current system, as it is a complete system and has been for a decade...

Hence looking at much better gear than I am using now.

I know it's pitiful compared with what's out there but that's what I have.

if on a budget 2nd hand is worth looking at ... automatically drop 40-60% or more off new price. the beauty with speakers are even stuff from 10 years back can be awesome. eg not even that old here for $450 ...will be a very decent centre...

if can find a cc570/ cc590 even more better ....

but will need decent amps feeding, even ones 100s of dollars eg old rotel 1075 or something of ilk....

Adelaide is pretty hard to find second gear unless it's listed here and that's rare too.

We have Ascension, Krix and VAF but it's cheaper to buy the last two brands interstate normally:(

No one wants to ship interstate just like that ebay Paradigm.

$650

if got more cash have a look at this kef ? maybe still around ? it too will need a decent amp though... most avrs are not going to do it justice...

ive heard all those excuses before :D

rubbish 😛 ... just matter of time.... you have been listening to same centre for 7 years and all of a sudden it must be now ? cant wait ? :D look around be surprised id suggest in what pops up. put a wtb in classifieds. be clear on what looking for and never know ... we have had a stack of centre speakers actually pop up for sale... id be very surprised they are not all good to ship ....

Hehe I bet lol.

Those two you linked look like awesome bargains that I would be very interested in.

Except that horrible white lol.

Maybe I'll deal with the yammy till something pops up here, but even then I may miss out.

I know I've had enough lol, 7 years and I've snapped. Must be the impending SUB upgrade.

actually it is not that easy to find a "pick up" sale in adelaide for what the op is hinting at. in fact the upper tier centres that come up in a year can be counted on one hand (on gumtree anyway) and they dont last long. ( live in Adel. and watch 2nd hand often)

so the odds are the op will need shipping if you buy 2nd hand and that is not a problem as long as the seller looks after you. packing, labelling and pick up done well.

best thing is to do what you think is best as its your money 🙂 but research never hurts before parting with the $$

i have the kef and have to say you will have a hard time finding anything better, i mated them seamlessly with many speakers like a chameleon.

don't be put off by the white, it doesn't look so garish in person and with the cover on its black from the front.

if in melbourne feel free to pop over for an audition to help shorten your list.

also have a drx4 if you want to upgrade your reciever

if they are what you ultimately want, the BEST option is to get 2 pair and turn one on its side as a center and one as a rear center but obviously the aesthetics are a little errr but you only live once i say ( this is from a guy who had a krix 4010 sub in his lounge)

Thanks for the reply Snoopy8.

Yes I realise the centre should be matching but that's not feasible with my lowly budget. I'll need to get one before I upgrade the FL+FR.

I'm looking at some Ascension/Adelaide speakers for the FL+FR when I have the funds.

Maybe I should just go speak to Edward.

Budget for the centre ~$1000.

I'd act (extremely!) quickly and try and grab 3 x of the Jamo D600 listed here

For your $1000 centre speaker budget you should be able to score 3x high quality matching LCR speakers delivered to Adelaide

If budget allows I'd definitely try and grab the matching surrounds from @Ray H  at the same time, otherwise you should be able to get some of the Jamo D500 or D600 for surround speakers later on as they do pop up on here and ebay occasionally

These will be a huge (!) step up from your Yamaha centre, and  being THX Ultra2 certified (if given enough power) these will handle THX reference level (105dB peak levels) so your ears will give in before these do

Quote

THX Ultra2 is a 7.1-speaker extension of the original Ultra spec. Ultra2 is designed to work well with multi-channel music and movie presentations playing up to reference levels in rooms of 3,000 cubic feet or larger. Each certification requires components to produce high volume levels, to play at a low level of distortion, and to disperse sound in specific ways, as well as to have extremely low noise and behave in a stable and predictable way.

Those jamos are very good, I read about them when they were released.

My avr is not up to the task sadly.

Thanks for all the input.

Ive decided to wait for a while till we get settled in the new place.

Probably svs ultra or some Adelaide speakers.

Will look at other options when the time comes.

For a stop gap I bought a Yamaha ns-c444 to better integrate with the current system.

I picked up the PB2000 as well. It's a huge upgrade and very happy with it.

The ns-c444 has done the trick.

Its way better. No more muffled sounding voices.

It'll stay like this for a while until I re look at pretty much a whole system upgrade 🤯

Thanks for your help.

Hey thanks for the info on this mate, I'm wondering how has the C444 held up, I am thinking about getting one myself to replace the C55 Centre in a 7.1 setup?
