Suggestions for dac

Heard many great things about the geiseler dacs. Im deciding on either the Project Pre Box S2 which does the full unfold for MQA priced around $595, or the Klein III Geiseler Dac which is $650. I will be mainly using Tidal but I am wondering if its even important getting a dac that does MQA?

Personally for the amount of music on MQA I didn’t bother. I would rather a good sounding Dac for all of the music I listen too.

I have a pretty big digital library but I listen to Tidal quite a bit, mainly for researching new music and find that a lot of it is on MQA. I use a Gieseler Gross and, despite it not being MQA compliant, find it’s very good with MQA and recommend it.

However, I think if Tidal is your main source you might as well consider having a dac that optimally handles what they claim to be their best format, or alternatively use software that unfolds it first - not sure if something like Audivarna does this.

Most renderer software packages can do the first “unfold” of MQA.  So, if like me, you have a non-MQA DAC, but stream Tidal MQA’s via Roon, then Roon does the first unfold in the software.  It’s not the whole enchilada, but it gives you something to compare to standard Tidal redbook flac.   From what I’ve heard, the difference is negligible anyway.

I too wholeheartedly recommend the Gieseler Groß DAC.  I compared it to my Mola Mola DAC and found it to be very close in tonal colour and transparency.  I still rate the Groß slightly behind the Mola Mola DAC and the Playback Designs Merlot DAC on absolute performance, but when you consider its price point (at 1/6 and 1/4 the cost respectively) its value cannot be ignored.

Some very good points made. Will take everyones thoughts into consideration. I am also looking for a streamer. At the moment im only using a chromecast audio as the source . Should I consider upgrading source first before dac?

My own experience suggests that the DAC has the more influence than the streamer. Then there is the influence of the USB or S/PDIF connection between the DAC and streamer. It can get complicated and challenging.

I'll throw a spanner in the works and suggest getting a high end streamer DAC.

See if you can get a second hand Blusound Node2. They have a handy Dac and do the first MQA unfold. Mine works really well with Tidal and then later on you can upgrade the Dac.

I might be wrong here but is the Dac on the Bluesound Node 2, the same as the dac on the NAD C 368 Hybrid Digital Dac?

For those that are interested I must of listened to around 8 DACs. Including one that cost 6 times my budget before deciding on the metrum NOS dac . As far as MQA goes Metrum offers an MQA module but don’t recommend it. I believe NOS DACs do not benefit from tricks like MQA and won’t be ordering the module

cheers

The headphone amp looks like pretty good value.

Saw The Cure at the Armadale Hotel in Melbourne in 1980, one of the best PA's I've heard, ever!

Mixing desk was, you guessed it, a studio Neve 24 channel mixing console. PA speakers were Turbosound

(now Funktion One https://www.funktion-one.com/about-us/our-history/ )

back to the DACs
