Hi

I occasionally do upgrades to my system - my system consists of brinkmann bardo turntable klyne 6pc phono pre amp Lamm LL 2.1 pre , Yamaha rx-v3077 avr sgr cx4fmk2 speakers and centre martin Logan atoms speakers velodyne sub - just sold my Ayon CD-5s CD- dac . I have $10,000 upgrade budget and am considering either to upgrade with a Dac for that much or to upgrade my turntable . I have no interest in changing speakers or preamps

any suggestions  on a Dac as this is the digital source thread ?

PS Audio DirectStream DAC is probably in the sweet spot for that price range new. If you can find a second hand MSB analog DAC or squeeze a deal out of their new discrete DAC that will take you into another category entirely. Unfortunately the poor AUD/USD exchange rate pushes this DAC new out of your price range. Whatever you do, audition, audition, audition!

What are you intending to feed into the DAC?  Server? CD transport? Streamer?

Also, what inputs and outputs do you need?

Gi would use it with a transport to play CDs and also to stream tidal

Based on your setup, and $10k range, I would recommend you listen to a Playback Designs Merlot DAC.  I have heard it in my system compared to the PS Audio Directstream DAC, and I would rate it as one of the best DACs in that pricerange.

The Denafrips Terminator DAC is reportedly good as well, but not easily auditioned.

I’d suggest the PS Audio DirectStream DAC also, I have had mine for many years now and with the free OS upgrades it has improved considerably, the latest version is awesome.

If you enjoy vinyl, used a CD player with PCM1704, like a rich musical sound and listen to 16bit via CD you might like to consider moving up to a TDA1541A based DAC.

The price of this doesn't reflect its design pedigree and quality.

I paired my CX3B Mk II's with a Gieseler Gross DAC (see reviews) and used a Primaluna Dialogue Preamp to add tube warmth. Suggest the Fein II which is better than the Gross, and use the rest of the money for something else...

What about the Ayon CD-35, that's been getting rave reviews amongst the heavy hitters i.e. Esoteric, DCS.

surely it's worth an audition.

Have a read on these forums about Clay’s (Gieseler) DAC’s.  I agree.  With that budget, you could get one of his best DAC’s, and still have loads for other goodies.

This DAC is the best I have ever owned and ever heard.  Matrix Audio

I am presently running one from a PC with a Pink Faun Audio Bridge set to output I2S (PS Audio Compatible).  Actually the usb connection is just as good.  It does PCM and Native DSD.    It measurements are superlative and is a clear step up from my previous latest spec W4S.
