'Tanking' does happen in professional sports, not just in tennis, and sometimes for good reasons. The morality is certainly questionable especially from the paying audience point of view.

I recall Max Wilander was criticised for skipping the smaller tournaments to save himself up for the Grand Slams, and ended up winning seven titles. That was not tanking, but Wilander was clearly been strategic to the irks of his peers.

As for Tomic, his hitting partner Djokovic thinks taking the prize money away was not fair - https://www.tennisworldusa.org/tennis/news/Novak_Djokovic/73554/novak-djokovic-tomic-has-a-history-of-playing-matches-with-less-effort-/

LOL, Max must be a brother of Mats?:D

😀 didn't you spelt it 'Matts' earlier today? It is all good mate.

Speaking of Wilander, he was critical of Federer's tactics during his two match points that he failed to convert. https://www.ubitennis.net/2019/07/djokovic-wouldnt-gone-mats-wilander-criticises-federers-wimbledon-tactics/

I don't think I'd make that sort of mistake..................wait, I'll have a look............no, I have definitely spelt it with one 't'!:D

Cheers,

Keith

No longer the Wimbledon, but Nick Kyrgios is certainly winning fans over with his style. Watch the rally point starting at 0:32 mark, it is wicked.

And he won the final overnight. Good comment by his opponent (world No. 10) post match:

“When you’re a winner, you’re always happy,” Medvedev said of Kyrgios. “We all know how Nick can play when he wants to and, this week, I think he wanted to play, and it was tough. Hopefully you can make many more like this.”

I have modified the title of this thread as the US Open starts this week.

Ash Barty is the second seed.

Serena Williams plays Sharapova in the first round. John Millman faces Nadal. Barty plays Zarina Diyas.

Lots to look forward to.

So Barty is through.

Serena demolished Sharapova.

Federer struggled against a qualifier.

Nadal received a code violation for time wasting.

Aussies Alexei Popyrin and Jordan Thompson gott through last night.

Kyrios plays tonight.

It's all happening at the US Open

Yep, she was a little shaky though..............hope she lifts over the next couple of rounds.

Sharapova only knows one speed..................unfortunately.

Not really, but Nagal did play well though..............he had nothing to lose, did he?

What else is knew!:D............he gets a pretty good ride most of the time.

Good to see Alexei and Jordan get up, fingers crossed they have a great tournament.

Kygrios has played and won..............he played well and was relatively well behaved too.

Cheers,

Keith

and Kyrgios won against Steve Johnson!!

In the 2nd set when Kyrgios was up 5-4 he was arguing with the umpire about nothing at the change of ends.

Steve Johnson also had something to say and told Kyrgios to "stop f****ing around and play tennis,"   :thumb:

Nick was pretty quiet after that and well behaved  :)       Perhaps some of his other friends can start telling Nick that more often.

How good was Alex de Minaur, beating the seventh seed, Nishikori?

He's a great talent , Wol - watched his previous match against Garin and he ran him into the ground!

Poor guys spirit was crushed by De Minaurs relentless precision.

Looking forward to seeing the highlights of this.

And Barty!!! 😁

Well that's a new excuse for losing:

“Gaming, bro. Call of Duty has ruined me,” Kyrgios moaned to his box about the first-person shooter video game early in the second set.

No Aussies left in singles - I think.

Djokovic booed off the court after retiring hurt with a shoulder injury while two sets down.

Roger and Serena both looking good.

I know, another thread title change ;) ..and a little late for this comp.

Loved the way the Aussies beat UK in the quarters and De Minour tonight, against Nadal is playing out of his skin. Won the first set 6-4. Let's hope he can keep it going.

Agut for Spain has been sensational.

Never get tired of watching De Minaur, looking fearless and heading for top 5 ranking within the year Wol.

Edit: jinxed Alex - Nadal has an uncanny knack of lifting his game when needed!

Alex is a fine young player, but he imo has no chance to break into the top 5 by end of year.

Nadal, Joker, Fed, Thiem and Stefanos will all be ahead of him.

If he can get to top 10, that would be outstanding.

Yeah, ranked 18 currently and defending a pretty good year in 2019, I can’t see De Minaur ranked in the top 5 by the end of the year either.

He needed desperately to win that second set tonight against Nadal too........anyhow, Serbia v Spain tomorrow should provide some pretty good tennis.

Cheers,

You could well be  right, however he can beat top 10 players on a good day - needs to work on his serve and build himself up, but certainly exciting to watch.

Keith,  you heading down to the Aust open this year?

I am going down the first 3 days with a ground pass to enjoy the back courts.

Hello Shane, @metal beat

My two eldest girls have tickets for men's and women's semi finals and the men's final, thanks to a very generous aunt, but I won't be going down this year unfortunately.

I hope you enjoy the ground pass days, but I found the last time I went in the first week, which was some years ago now, the event is so crowded with people just out for a day at the Open, that you struggled to get into the show courts. I'm thinking back 8 - 10 years though and at that time the first week was busy, but you could still get into any of the show courts in the first week with little difficulty. Now, there are queues outside each show court just to get in, but I'll be keen to hear how you find it this year. I do like the first week of the Open and you will see some very good tennis on those show courts too.

Cheers,

Keith
