Amanero new Linux firmware

Recommended Posts

Dom at Amanero has released a new Linux firmware called 2006be10

It is getting great feedback on the Github thread here

https://github.com/lintweaker/xmos-native-dsd/issues/12

scroll right down to the bottom.

This firmware should give perfect DSD512 playback on Linux based systems like

SOtM SMS200 series, Sonore MicroRendu, Antipodes, Auralic etc.

I will thoroughly test it next week and report back.

No doubt you are aware all my DAC’s use the Amanero board for the USB input so this is a big plus.

Happy to find out your results Clay. You know I'm an UltraRendu guy.

Yes it is good to see that they keep working at improving the firmware for Linux systems.

Sounds like this version is spot on - fingers crossed!

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts Clay - hoping it is fairly easy to update.

Is it meant to improve the SQ or is it focussed on connectivity with Linux systems?

At this stage I can't recommend using it with my DAC's.

I'm actually getting better results with 2003be_71A

I will check with Amanero but I think the muting timing does not suit AKM chips.

The firmware does not seem to effect sound quality - mainly just playback compatibility.

Update!

just tried 2006be10 again & it now appears to be perfect.

Zero pops, all DSD  rates including DSD512 fine.

PCM all good too.

Maybe I had a bad flash the first time.

Also with the Amanero firmware tool all other Linux versions have now been removed so looks like 2006be10 is the final.

Awesome news Clay. Now how do I upgrade?

Hi PKay

I have emailed you the info.

Actually I'm very impressed all round with this new firmware.

I have an old Celeron NUC that was always hit & miss with DSD files & would only play low rate stuff.

Well just fired it up with a Fein II & the new Amanero firmware.

Absolutely perfect!

Zero pops at all & even plays DSD512 perfectly - I was totally floored!

Sounds quality seems up a bit too.

So here are the settings

CPLD_1081_DSDSWAPPED

Flash instructions

Amanero flash process for giez dac.pdf

I use a small pair of pointy nose tweezers to short the two pins together for one second to erase the current firmware

Download the Amanero firmware tool oem tool 117 from here

https://amanero.com/combo384_firmware.htm

It does come with flashing instructions but you need to do it slightly differently as in my DAC's the Amanero board is powered internally.

So when when the instructions say

unplug the USB cable - you need to actually switch the DAC off

&

replug the USB cable - switch the DAC on

The attached amended PDF shows this

I take it that the download is not the slave?

Also can short circuiting the P3 pins fry the chip? or board?

correct  - just download the bottom oem tool 117 in the Amanero link

No - only short the pins for about a second tho

It might be a good idea if anyone is thinking of doing this to check with me first on your current setup.

There are compatibility issues depending on what firmware the DAC currently has.

With say a Gross DAC +  Auralic Aries mini  you may get pops with DSD track changes by upgrading to the 2006be10 Amanero firmware.

Remember the saying

I pulled the pin and updated my firmware (thank you Clay) and I really like it. As an FYI I have an old Antipodes DS Reference with early/outdated software. It has been a bit unstable of late which I’m trying to resolve. The earlier firmware did give me some pops with DSD. This version is very quiet in that regard.

In terms of music playback I think it is a fair bit better so a double bonus for me.

Hello from Italy! I 'really interested in your fw upgrading job. I just bought an Audio gd R7HE,  mounting an Amanero version done under license by Mr. Kingwa. I would be grateful if someone could help me to perform the fw upgrade specifically on my gear. With my Auralic Aries G1 dsd works actually just for DoP 64 & 128.

Thanks for your help!

Follow instructions from here.

** For steps 6 and 7, found that it was better to power DAC off and on.

And :welcome: to the forum

Hi Lodovico,

Audio GD build there own version of the Amanero board & the pads you have to short to erase the firmware

are in a different location to the Amanero instructions.

The correct info is here

http://www.audio-gd.com/Pro/dac/Amanero/AmaneroEN.htm

Good luck - Cheers Clay

Very well said...

So: My Agd R7HE with last fw (asy3), and Amanero updated, plays everything up to DSD 512 brilliantly, linked to Aries g1. Unfortunately as you said some big POP occur switching to or from dsd files. I can get used to it, but with such  a brilliant machine would really be nice to fix it...any suggestion? Thanks anyway!

It is probably best to check with Kingwa at Audio GD.

With my DAC's we sometimes have to fine tune the DAC firmware to Amanero & that can change with Amanero firmware changes.
