Buying albums, best sites to use

Recommended Posts

I've always been a physical medium user for music, not really interested in downloaded albums, call me old fashioned and I'll agree, but not for me. Trouble is the CD / record stores just don't have what I want. I can spend hours thumbing through racks (especially at Dada's records, amazing selection) but rarely do I find exactly what I want.

So buying online is increasingly attractive even though I'd rather spend my money I a b&m store. Advice please, for someone wanting to buy music as per the list below, all discovered after following links on here, RTR FM radio station or music mag reviews, what is the best site to get hold of these less than familiar titles and what are the difficulties / downsides of doing so for a cherry retaining music purchaser such as myself.

Arve Henriksen – Chiaroscuro

Sly And Robbie meets Nils Petter- Molvaer with Eivind Aarset and Vladislav Delay – Nordub

Trio Elf – 746

Mammal Hands - Floa

Mammal Hands - Shadow Work

The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble. – Here be Dragons

Collocutor-The Search

Bristopia - Get The Blessing

Upaj Collective - My East Is Your West

Nubiyan Twist – Jungle Run

Bugge Wesseltoft & Prins Thomas

Food - Mercurial Balm

 Richard H Kirk ‎– Dasein.

Get the Blessing - Lope and Antilope

Mark De Clive-Lowe - Heritage

Mark De Clive-Lowe - Heritage II

I find it weird with Amazon, and discogs too that they divert you to a list of different sellers in many countries that offer many different prices often crazy expensive then later add shipping. Seems a complicated way of doing things. Are there no (preferably Aussie) sites that have a central stores to order from? or that too hard these days.

I did have a (dur moment) brainwave, and am sending the list to Dada records to get me quotes on the titles. Will be interesting to see how many he can locate and the kind of money he wants. May work out easier for a lazy luddite like me.

A quick search of Amazon.com on a lot of those titles and they all available from Amazon direct (ie not from Amazon approved sellers), so postage all in one at the cheapest rates, from the one place.

Just a word on that Elf Trio disc. I'm almost certain it's out of print. There's one on Amazon for over $70 and a used one on ebay. Title Music in Surry Hills (Sydney) had a stack of deleted Enja albums (cd only) going for $2 a pop. The Elf Trio disc was one of them. I managed to get a copy and it's pretty good.

Title once had three shops in Melbourne! Though a change in ownership "rationized" all those, now they're only in Sydney.

How can you see what's going for $2, their website doesn't seem to work at the moment.

Yeah, they're website's pretty ordinary at the best of times. They never did have the heavily discounted discs on the web. There must've been 8000-10,000 when I first stumbled on them about 5 years ago. I'm not sure what the setup is like now at Surry Hills. They had 2 shops there and now there's only one since they opened their flagship store at Barangaroo.

That would make sense, when Title was in Melbourne, they were distributers for ECM, Enja was part of ECM at one stage I believe.

many thanks Ian McP, Mr Buzz- Martin and Cliff. Havn't heard back from Dada's yet but will have a go at those links, may make a few purchases on line yet. I'll report back here if I have success anywhere.

So...... Dada's have been good to their word and got back to me on Tuesday, below is their considerable efforts to fill my order  and good on 'em.

Arve Henriksen – Chiaroscuro  Rune Grammofon label is no longer available through local channels, would be $45 (ouch!) out of Europe/Norway

Sly And Robbie meets Nils Petter- Molvaer with Eivind Aarset and Vladislav Delay – Nordub  available to order $31

Trio Elf – 746    Stocked this years back but looks like it is now out of print

Mammal Hands – Floa out of stock confirming price with supplier but was $30-32 from memory

Mammal Hands - Shadow Work    in stock $35

The Kilimanjaro Dark Jazz Ensemble. – Here be Dragons   stocked this years ago but now looks like it is out of print

Collocutor-The Search.  Was vinyl only and deleted. Would still be available digitally on the On The Corner bandcamp https://collocutor.bandcamp.com/album/the-search (and looks like they are possibly going to do a repress of the vinyl)

Bristopia. – Get the Blessing  available to order confirming price but probably around $32

Sarathy Korwar Upaj Collective, - My East is Your West.  in stock $21

Nubiyan Twist – Jungle Run  currently on order, waiting on stock listed at $25

Bugge Wesseltoft & Prins Thomas  available to order $22

Food - Mercurial Balm available out of Europe for $26

Richard H Kirk ‎– Dasein. out of stock but still listed $26

Get the Blessing - Lope and Antilope  in stock $30

Mark De Clive-Lowe Heritage

Mark De Clive-Lowe Heritage II    The local Australian distributor is only running the vinyl of these two new Mark De Clive-Lowe titles, CDs listed in the states at around $35-36 but might be able to get them cheaper, will advise

So not the cheapest when compared to the on-line, for instance the Britopia is quoted at 13Pounds on Juno 10Pounds in Ian's link, so around $20 -25 but then add postage probably not far off, and maybe GST too??

I reckon I'll buy Dada's stock items and order in a couple of others with them. I do like the idea of supporting the local stores and still find buying through the 'net a pain. Definitely got a better handle on now though, may give it a go in future.

Arve Henriksen - Chiaroscuro is available from the rarewaves-outlet store on ebay for $29 + $3.00 postage. (Vinyl).

Trio Elf is available on cd via ebay for about $22 all up.

Thanks MrB, - could be an expensive few days coming up. Dada's too are still giving it their best.

Update confirmed a few  prices
MAMMAL HANDS     FLOA $33
GET THE BLESSING     BRISTOPIA  $34
and no joy on a cheaper source for the Mark de Clive-Lowe's CDs around the $35-36 mark, vinyl would be $32 for "Heritage I" and $35 for "Heritage II"
Cheers

Might just go for the Vinyl on MdC-L, been You-tubing him and really like his style.

Bought this morning and spent the arvo listening;-

Get the Blessing - Lope and Antilope  This is a fantastic album, bears comparison to a tougher edged Cinimatic Orchestra occasionally, flavours of EST maybe, hard to pin down as they are their own beast. So good I played it twice.

Sarathy Korwar Upaj Collective, - My East is Your West. Then this! wow, what a trip. I love Indian / electronic crossover e.g. Nitin Sawney, Asian Dub Foundation, Talvin Singh etc. and crossover world in general but Indian jazz of this style and quality is something else altogether. Mind-blowing good.

Also ordered the vinyl of Mark De Clive-Lowe Heritage   Looking forward to that arrival. Will probably drip-feed myself with most of the others over the coming months.

Many thanks to Chris at Dada, looks like my on-line ordering of music will have to wait awhile yet.

I stumbled across Title in Surry Hills a few weeks ago and had a whale of a time.  Purchased a good number of vinyl and some great ECM on vinyl and CD.  The bloke in there was really friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. I would describe their shop as well curated. A real pleasure to browse.

Another SNA let me know about the Barangaroo store after I posted my purchases but unfortunately I never got the chance to visit.

Does anybody know which labels offer high res downloads if you buy the vinyl version of releases.  I am heading to vinyl (?) but also like convenience and mobility of digital and not so satisfied with the MP3 download.  Of course i could buy all versions ....?

I know ECM does on their newer releases. In fact, a lot of new releases on other labels now offer downloads, some of which are immediately available after you pay for the vinyl,pre-orders etc.

I've had a word with another member who gets to Title occasionally. When he gets there he'll have a word to Ian (probably the guy you spoke to) and see if he can grab you a copy of the Elf Trio disc. From what I've heard all those cheapies have been stored away on premises because they haven't the room anymore with the closing of their second store in Surry Hills. It could be a while but I'll keep you posted. It'll only be $2 for the disc so you can have it for free. Cheers.

Thanks Martin, but that should be destined for our OP Grimmie who has been looking for a hard copy version. However I do enjoy exploring new music so will give them a go via Tidal (once I finish the Don Henley album End of Innocence playing through MQA).

Cheers

I work near Title at Barangaroo.  Too near.  The store manager says they often have a lot of stuff that has been delivered and is not yet in dispaly racks due to space constraints or other priorities. After checking system he always seems happy to check in the storage areas to find things that are apparently in store. Find him helpful and enthusiastic.
