Best live album

Recommended Posts

Marillion live at Albert Hall is my fave at the moment.
Steven Wilson's Home Invasion is also pretty special.

Any other live Marillion, Fish, Porcupine Tree, Pineapple Thief and l still have a soft spot for Deep Purple's Live in Japan.

I like live albums for their immediacy and atmosphere, which can often make up for the less than stellar sound quality, or the odd cough.

Quick scan of my albums, all of these I can highly recommend

Nirvana ‎– MTV Unplugged In New York

Leonard Cohen, Live at the Isle of Wight 1970

Tom Waits ‎– Glitter And Doom Live

Wilco ‎– Kicking Television: Live In Chicago

Alice In Chains ‎– MTV Unplugged

Johnny Cash, Live at Folsom Prison

Coltrane - Live At the Village Vanguard

Jeff Buckley, Live at Sin-E

Fela Kuti - Live!

Bernstein, Mahler Symphony No 2, NYPO

Joy Division -Still (Live, bonus)

Rodrigo Y Gabriela ‎– Live Manchester And Dublin

Bill Callahan – Rough Travel For A Rare Thing
B.B. King - Live at the Regal

Led Zeppelin ‎– The Song Remains The Same

Ella in Berlin – Mack The Knife

Miles Davis: Live at the Plugged Nickel

+ Tom Waits.

There is a rawness to this guys voice that is at once Death Metal followed by a mix of blues and Rolling Stones rhythm.

Indeed.

I have about a dozen lps of live Tom Waits performances but mostly the sound quality is below average due to their bootleg nature.

Thankfully, that's not the case with the officially released Glitter and Doom.

Thanks for all the recommendations.  I’ve been in Katherine for a few days so only got the chance to start making my way through the recommendations tonight.

Started with Belafonte at Carnegie Hall which brought back memories of my parents playing him on vinylwhen I was a kid.  I knew most of the songs!

Then moved on to Paul Simon’s Concert In The Park. Graceland is one of my favourite albums (vinyl and CD) which I think is really well recorded with high sq.  I enjoyed the additional rhythm section of the concert.

Not it sure how I forgot Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison, Neil Diamond Hot August Night or Nils Lofgren Acoustic Live. Must be that drop of sweat as JukKluk2 said.

Wonderful natural recordings and vocal harmonies.Who needs a studio when you can make recordings like this?

Recently acquired and been enjoying a very folksy Neil Young Tonight’s the Night Live  - at the Roxy Theatre.  4 days later the good old Cheech & Chong played the same venue.

As Donny Hathaway Live has been already mentioned. Double album. The live disk includes The Bottle, Winter in America (just as relevant today as in '76), Home Is Where the Hatred Is, Lady Day and John Coltrane, There Must Be Something. Went to see him three times. Great twice, didn't show the other time.

Emmylou Harris with Spyboy

Spotify Prayer In Open D just Emmylou singing and Buddy Miller strumming

Calling My Children  Home no music just Emmylou singing and Buddy backing her up

Pure country music doesn’t get much better than this

Saw this tour in Brisbane probably the best live country music I’ve ever heard

Blady Blade on drums (from the Neville Brothers)Buddy Miller On guitar and Daryl Johnson On bass and assorted instruments
