zippi
Correct JJ! You get the prize of a weird roadtrip with a family that's loosing their hinges in a dilapidated VW Kombi, requiring a push/downhill start (plus the subsequent run up into the kombi by the pushers) and is always threatening to quit working,as well as the punchline from the above scene in strip format, plus a few other similar gems: And agree re Alan Arkin - a force of nature in this film and most others he's been in. zippi
Another Clue: The director wanted to undertake a gargantuan project of making a film version of Frank Herbert's saga 'Dune' in mid 70s. Had he started it - most likely would have failed as the technology wasn't quite there for what he wanted to do (but who knows), however he did make a story board / a giant comic book with the help of Moebius, cutting edge German visual artist H. R. Giger and British sci-fi illustrator Chris Foss, which was the demo tool for presenting their ideas and the look of the film to the studios/producers. Sufficient funds were never found to start filming. Many of the ideas from the storyboard Dune Book have subsequently filtered into into and shown up in films such as Star Wars (light sabers: Luke vs Wader saber fight + scene layout), Alien, Indiana Jones (Raiders of the lost Arc), Blade Runner, Prometheus, Contact..... The Dune was eventually produced mid 80's, directed by a hogtied David Lynch, very little if any reference to the original vision and under complete creative control by the studio/producers. It's a largely unwatchable film. Edited August 1, 2019 by zippi

allthumbs
I'm going to take a potshot, because the word sprung from the dark corner of my mind because of the image of the skeleton and I may have taken note of it in glancing at it at sometime "Leviathan"? Can't tell you another word about it not a single word.
zippi
That is correct @allthumbs. It is Leviathan (Russian: Левиафан, Leviafan) from 2014 by Andrey Zvyagintsev. A similarly bleak movie to the @mrbuzzardstubble's 13 Tzameti, however concerned with more mundane (less Deerhunter) plot. But they do share the depiction of brutalities of everyday life in current Russian/ex-Soviet parts of the world. Loosely inspired however by the events in Midwest of USA in early/mid 2000's (that was a bit of shock revelation for me). A bonus is a clear influence of Andrey Tarkovsky (and also Bergman) on Andrey Zvyagnitsev resulting in a very beautiful looking film that contrasts the bleakest of the bleak plots.
allthumbs
That shot of the guy on the rock and the whale skeleton on the beach, in my mind there is a chessboard on the sand between the two of them, the man looks up and the Grim Reaper with Scythe is standing beside him the Reaper looks at the chessboard and distractedly says "aahh Remi". You may be referring to Bergmans - The Seventh Seal. It's a great film from the 60s - one of my faves by Ingmar. edit: actually from 1957 - just saw it again last night Edited August 10, 2019 by zippi
