Replacing old Boston passive subwoofer drivers?

Hi all, I have a question about replacing old Boston 595x thx subwoofer drivers. I estimate the subwoofers are about 25yrs old. They have an efficiency of 85db and handle 250w and 8ohms. It uses a sealed enclosure.

I’ve now got much more power at my disposal after buying a crown xls2002 to replace the previous Dayton 1000w rack amp.  Would replacing them with something like this

be a good idea?

I’m looking for some more Spl. I can now get spl peaks of 122db at the LP. And that is using 2 Aslan pro12 passive subs as well.

(4 subs in total)

the external dimensions of each box are about 45x46x46cm and the wood used looks like 15mm thick. So I’m guessing 42x43x43 internal?

thanks for any advise

Just looking at your dimensions, it's about a 60 litre box. Is it ported or sealed?

Just getting a driver and plopping it into any old box won't get the results you want.

Also 122db is a lot. Maybe you would be better off making sure all of your subs are working well together? Maybe like a minidsp or something similar to get them all playing nicely.

What exactly are you looking for?

Hi Wazza lee.

they are sealed subs.

currently I can just reach reference levels, (I’m using the Atmos trailer of amaze to check gains as there is a thunder blast which has a loud peak (122db)) but the amp is slightly clipping at the peaks and the old Boston subs are reaching there mechanical limit, I estimate the subs are getting about 300w. I was thinking if I put in some 4 ohm drivers the amp can deliver a bit more power, about 500w ( I am currently running 2 Aslan pro12’s running parallel into 2 ohms and the 2 Boston’s running parallel into 4 ohms from a crown xls2002) along with more efficient driver, perhaps I can get that 2-3 dbs more and therefore reach reference level without the driver being overdriven, and maybe the amp will have a little bit of headroom.

to be honest I probably wouldn’t watch many movies at reference, but would be fun at the odd occasion ?

If you want a good/reliable result, then you will need to replace the driver with the same, or an equivalent.

If you want to use a different driver, then you'll need to redesign the whole subwoofer (box, EQ, etc.)

If you replace your current driver with one which is not equivalent....  then someone should be able to provide you advice on which driver to buy, and how close it will get  to matching your original driver.

Bummer, I thought being passive and sealed, it would be just a matter of choosing a new driver suitable for my enclosure size ?

no point replacing with the same driver, as I will get the same results
