"Rent went from $1,450 a week to $5,000 a week."

When you have to pay $1000 a day before you get out of bed I bet he wished he bought the property in 1964....

That's about all it's worth ($1450). It's like a ghost town up that end of Pitt St.

Not long term
You just claim "I can't find one"
IMHO negative gearing is an economic "cancer"

Oh, I agree......................but if you claim a loss for your stock market gambling habit............................it only seems fair to claim for your property speculation...............doesn't it?

I may be veering off-topic here, but I remember going into Lawsons back in about 1980 when it was on the opposite side of the street, a larger store where they also sold books and magazines. Not long after they moved around the corner into Liverpool St, by which time it was just "vinyls". I don't think they were there for very long before moving into the current premises, sandwiched between Passlows and another second hand book store/rabbit warren. I haven't been into Lawsons for years but it's a pity it's going to Gowings, I bought many pre-loved CDs and DVDs there.

along with so many people of my  (and the next) gen in sydney, the discovery, as a teenager, of that part of sydney was just incredible. So many records bought at Martin's, as well as the other 2.

In the doubleman, Christopher Koch brilliantly depicted a similar part of Hobart, "the land of second hand"

I suppose all the second hand record shops from the cross have closed.

There must be still 2 shops in Newtown I suppose.

and here in tiny Canberra we have 4!!!

Driving through Mitchell today (if you dont know its a daggy light industrial area) on my way to (can I say it? buy more expedit) I spied the sign for the newest record store. I haven't been yet. I would be surprised by  now if I don't know who's running it, so I 'll have to go

I remember a headline 10 years back stating Pitt St rent had overtaken (I think it was 5th Avenue) in NYC as the most expensive in the world.

That strech between Liverpool and Bathurst is well overdue for redevelopment, maybe there's a bigger picture?

I always thought Lawsons' must have owned the premises, no disrespect but they didn't seem to try that hard, anyway that's not why they are closing.

I would like to thank them for a mint Sandinista

Agree. In fact when there were quite a few second hand record shops down there, the only one that ever seemed a professional, inviting set up was Redeye, the others had piles of records all over the place that were a bit difficult to sort through and an over riding mildew smell to the shops and pricing that was often hard to work out. I managed to find a few gems in the late 90's but it was hard work and I always thought a newcomer to the area might struggle to sort out the record shops from the porn emporiums.

That part of Pitt Street was a dump for years when there was the big empty hole on the other side of the road that became World Square. The block where Lawsons is (was) will surely be developed sooner than later.

Rent kills so many of these now fringe retailers or any specialty ones.

Unfortunately when the same product can easily be bought online, this is what kills specialty retailers, as the masses complain they can buy it cheaper and will not pay the premium of a bricks and mortar store 5 minutes walk from their highly paid CBD office job.

It was a ghost town in the 90's. Was always something being built around there so the hoardings were always up, streets dirty with mud. Get off at Town Hall station, then I'd do the 3 record stores there Lawsons, Ashwoods, and Phantom. Then down to Red Eye in the Tank Stream arcade and back to Town Hall (with a quick stop at Brashs for any new stuff) and check out my purchases while travelling home.  Good days.
