To me the downfall was the path from 2 channel audio to 5.1 and 7.1 instead of concentrating on high resolution 2 channel digital audio. It has been a great time for makers of cheap amps, speakers and processors, but not so much for high fidelity sound. Yes, hearing noises behind your back is fun, but I got over it after about half a movie. I will never "get over" high quality 2 channel audio.
