Finally finished my 6sn7 preamp. 😀 not a bad outcome considering 50% material was recycled. Thanks a lot mwhouston for schematics.

Great job! Side question. Do you have any photos of the speakers and grills in the background? Are they diy metal grills? I'd love some more details on what you used and how if so? ta

Thanks!

The speakers are Elsinores designed by Joe Rasmussen, the grille material is black aluminum which you can get from an automotive shop

I hope this helps

Stereo Subs & Two Way Monitor Build

It’s been slow going on my two way monitor with stereo sub build but I’ve finally finished finished one of the two subs!!!

The subs are 10inch CSS drivers with 2 x passive radiators (185grams) in 56L cabinet tuned to 27hz.

The cabinets are made out of 18mm MDF, rebated with router and cross braced. The front baffle is 48mm and has angled facets which I did with tracksaw.

It did take a while to get the angles right but overall happy with how they came out.

Don’t really believe in too much lining on sub cabinets so just some underlay felt on few sides. I put far more focus on getting the bracing as solid as possible.

The cabinet was primed in 3 coats of shellac primer, 3 coats of gloss black enamel base coat then finished with 4 coats of 2k gloss clear to 2500grit before buff and polish.

The sub is driven by 500watts dsp plate amplifier.

Only just got it all together yesterday so haven’t had a chance to do final measurement but just broken it in and very happy with the result so far!

Here’s some pics of the build. Onto finishing off the other sub then onto the 2 way monitor build!!!

Great thanks. If I end up doing grills for my Kairos I'll probably have to do something similar that can take the weight of a 6kg cat because of the angled fronts haha.

Fortunately I have been able to use rare earth magnets and metal rim metal grills from Jaycar and Altronics for all my grill requirements. It think it is essential to keep grills on when your not around or kids or cats around.

My Beymas were $1K each and 15" diameter and to have an adult swing a bag into them or kid poke finger in would be an expensive fix. Because the gills are not acousticly transparent I must remove each time for serious listening. But with the magnetic attachment that's dead easy. I'm so paranoid if I have the system on for back ground music the grills stay on.

Yeah similar to my thinking. They can come off when listening. Any links to the products you used?

Yet another tube hybrid headphone amp. This time it’s for me, so I’ve added a few extras. Kinda running out of space under the hood. Just one more PCB to fit in and it’ll be done. If all goes well, tomorrow I’ll give it the smoke test 🤞

Thanks [emoji4] still got a bit of clean up and wiring to go. If it works, it should be a pretty good unit.

That is just incredible!

I’m really curious as to how you did the bevels. I have a similar (same?) track saw, is it the TS55? The depth of cut is clearly deeper than a single cut, and the angle is the opposite to what would be easiest - I’m guessing multiple cuts on the different layers, and packers used under the track?

I’m intrigued...

Cheers,

Whatever happened to the build someone was doing, it was a large Tube amp, Black Gates and other high end components, over 3 levels with lots of Google Sketch images etc.

Like this?

The SMPS is a Meanwell. I’ve had good luck with them, although this one is giving me a little grief. The other is a toroidal transformer and a dual +5v supply from eBay

I had the SMPS sitting around and I’ve had good results with these in the past. It works fine, just had to reduce the value of a low esr cap that was on the amp as the SMPS didn’t have enough poke to get the show going. Hasn’t effected the SQ as far as I can hear. The whole unit sounds pretty decent.

Often the best to use up parts on hard instead of buying more. Sometimes I go through my caps looking for anything which will suit. "Grace" 6SN7 tube preamp is a good example. I needed some output caps and had on hand the Jensen copper PIO I'd had for ten years. I also had some Russian PIOs but the Jensens would be superior.

Long weekend building....

Added a feed back switch:

off = no global negative feedback

On = 6dB negative feedback

Added bias level switches:

Off = moderate bias level

On = full/high bias level

Really nice sound I am very happy with it.

The surprise for me was the bass. It plays low and fast despite being a single ended tube amp.

Just over 100 mA bias probably helps though.....

Earlier this year I built a set of DIY red speakers using left over drivers. They sound brightish and they do image well but would like to drop the tweeter about 3db. The boxes were tuned by ear so that the bass would be strongest in the 50 to 150hz range. In order to tune the boxes I used cardboard cut outs and then once happy with the final tuning got the ports cut to the correct length. Paint is 9 coats of single stage acrylic enamel wet sanded between every 3, 2, and 2 coats.
