Spendor BC1 ?

Recommended Posts

Why do these 'Spendors' not look quite 100%?...

1) Those rear labels say "The Radio People Ltd'... Spendor labels with their (consecutive) serial numbers may be still located on the upper rear panel, where they are normally found?

2) All Spendor BC1 (& SP1s) I have seen, have non-veneered, plain Birch Ply back panel, recessed flush & fixed with numerous brass countersunk woodscrews - this was done for future servicing as these spkrs were intended for studio use.

3) The LF driver has white or clear surrounds/suspension rubber - all the BC1s I've seen have black surrounds (& doped black cone). Maybe surrounds have been replaced?

Perhaps these are very early models - serial numbers should reveal approx manuf date (BC1s were made betw around 1969 to 1989).

Other Spendor details seem kosher (apart from the port tube mod)... LF driver rear fixing & location, drivers (Celestion HF1300 of course), Spendor grilles & nameplates, cabinet veneering, size, etc.

Hi Owen,

Knew you would chip in as a Spendor SP1 owner.

:)

Noted all your observations too.

"The Radio People" were official HK Spendor agents in the 70s/80s but are famous for their LS3/5a copies. Maybe they made BC1 clones too ?

Further investigation shows the front with fewer screws and white midbass surround was used on early BC1's.

The rear is still a mystery.

Good work, Watson...

Ser No's suggest 1969 to early 70s vintage.

From what I can see, early BC1 woofers also had different magnet style (alnico likely), not the modern ceramic/ferrite flat pancake magnets.

Been there.

Actually knew a guy called Watson with some BC1's...

;)

From the Yahoo Spendor Group datafiles (been so long I forgot I had signed up  ), SN suggests a 1972 birthday.

Too old for me.

Interesting how these originally closed May 3 2009 with a $950 start, no reserve, 41350 Buy Now.

Current listing was $1200 start, no reserve, $1650 Buy Now.

Typical TM marketing... if they don't sell first time, re-list at a higher price.

:P
