Hi there, has anyone had any experience with these:

http://www.trademe.co.nz/Electronics-photography/Home-audio/Speakers-and-stands/Floor-speakers/auction-219516415.htm

I currently just have Wharfedale Diamond 9.1's, which I am pretty happy with, but would love to try a bit of NZ made – would the Images be an upgrade?

I was thinking about spending $300 odd on a DIY attempt, just to quench my desire to experiment with different sounds (I'm just a beginner), but maybe these could be a good option instead. Thoughts?

For the price not bad, but mmmmmmmmmmmmmm depend show much you want to spend.

If you don't have decent stands you'd probably benefit from those more than anything.

Cool, thanks for the feedback. I suppose I'm not really expecting an upgrade for $300, I would just like to try something different. They look like a rather old model, so I think I'll give it a miss and put the $$$ towards a DIY project.

I'm sure my stands could be improved upon, but I'm too attached to the behemoths to try something new:

I'm actually really happy with my system at the moment, it is producing great sounds considering it cost a total of $800. I guess I just have itchy feet and want to experiment

There are some Image 402's and 404's on sale at Trademe at present, reasonable prices. I've got a pair of 402's and they are a very satisfying and to my senses accurate sound. When I think of getting standmounts I go back to the 402's. Not time to upgrade yet. The 404's offer much of the same with more bass but in a smaller room the 402's are doing fine.

There are also these Krix which look interesting http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=220077778 with reviews on http://www.audioreview.com/

but I haven't heard them. They rate at 4 ohms so may need a bit of power to drive.

Hmm, I see the auction ended with no bids. Surely they are a pretty good speaker for $265!? I'm still curious to see know they sound, so will keep an eye out to see if they are relisted at a cheaper price. $265 odd is pretty good just for the drivers, and could form the basis of a DIY project, but I suppose that's a bit of a waste of an existing speaker!

Thanks for the pointers to the floorstanders, they look nice, but I'm restricted to stand mounts at the moment (due to my far from ideal listening situation).

I was put off them as they look a bit odd to me - I don't remember any Image speakers with drivers like that. The current 401 looks quite different, and my (probably faulty) memory of the previous model is that they looked like cut down 402s or 400s (I stilll have a pair of 400's :) )

The earlier 401s were rear ported according to the last item on this page but there was a 401SE prior to that so they may be that model or even the model before that, but they don't seem to have the same family resemblance as the Image speakers I know and enjoy.

If I was going to buy them I'd email Chris first to find out exactly what drivers were in them and when he made them - it may be a good 15+ years ago.

Thanks guys, yes they do look very different to the current 401. The auction said Vifa drivers, and 4-6 years old.

I just started the ball rolling on my DIY project, so that should keep me distracted from trying to find 'bargains' on trademe for a while .

On the subject of trademe bargains: http://www.trademe.co.nz/Browse/Listing.aspx?id=219226069

I'm very annoyed at myself for missing out on this, I thought I should play it safe and ask a few things before I used the ‘buy now’. Unfortunately somebody else realised it was a great deal and bet me to it, now he’s selling it for $600!

I think the price is rather optimistic, but still, I could have made at least $100 from it, or kept it as a second amp!

He who hesitates is lost!
