Why the bidder don't call the vendor and get some discount?

Yes that's all well and good, but what strikes me is:

8.5" aluminum woofers from Norway(x2) Got to be Seas, Prestige by the looks

7" carbon Kevlar-cellulose Aerogel midrange driver from France. Definitely Audax, I have 4 of this driver.

1.5" silk dual concentric ring tweeter from Denmark. Scanspeak or Viva - tymphany either way

1" rear firing ambience mid/tweeter with fabric dome and transmission-line loading from Denmark. Tymphany again

All drivers use our proprietary Advanced Motor System with low distortion design. They did? Wow.

Yes I do enjoy naming the drivers in speaker systems. It gives a DIYer some perspective.

I see the bid has been removed now.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if the seller had refused to remove it, after all you must confirm your bid to be a legally binding act...

I think the seller knows very well that there would be very little if any, where people would pay for such speakers without first auditing. I have no proof, but, is the seller paying anything for listing his speakers? Or is he using trademe as a form of free advertising? If he is using it as a free rider, trademe has a flaw in the system

I think we all helped Sam Morgan become a very rich man... if the speakers sell, then there is nice commission. No sale, no commission. Seems fair to me. Free advertising seems to be a fair byproduct of the process, but it's not without the risk of damaging the value of the brands advertised...

All commercial decisions that Trademe and sellers like Mr Parmenter have to consider.

Don't sweat the small stuff. I don't think there's a great swindle occurring Quentin.

Those speaker look bloody horny regardless. Don't know about the price they command (or any other brand asking SILLY money come to think of it!) But they would look nice in my living room. Most I would pay for those would be around the $10-$12K mark. Any more than that just doesn't seem right. It's not as though they took 800hours to build at $35/hour!

The reality though is that getting those drivers is only one part of the equation. I'd be interested how much it would cost to get them, work out a crossover to sound like the speakers in question, then tool up so that you can produce a quantity of them rather than one pair now and then.

Cheers,

Craig.

No swindle for sure - but I do take issue with trade me sellers that put up an auction while still selling the product privately (without stating that in the auction) - which is something this seller apears to do.

Have you heard these?

I hope so because if not your telling us that you decide how much a speaker is worth by its looks. Hmmmm.

Fair enough. It's up to you how you like to do business with someone...

OTOH, when a seller makes this clear, it is sometimes interpreted as 'pressure selling'.

In this case however it's reasonably obvious.

Re. lspkr retail prices.... spkrs are probably the most difficult hifi item to design & achieve a good product result IMO... as anyone who has tried to design & build one will know. Certainly, R&D/prototyping would be huge cost factors.

I have heard them... they are definitely worth the asking price! I considered buying some of the earlier version a few years ago. If everything was sold at the 'cost' of its parts, there would be no money merry go round at all... and then what would happen? a very naive view to assume that because it is more than you want to pay it can't be any good, or is a rip off or whatever...

You could nearly clone them, buy the standard drivers for a 2-3 grand, cloning the crossover too would probably cost as much, and it'll need to be adjusted since the motors aren't standard, but who here would want to buy these and chop them up in the hopes of making something worse? The real difference with these speakers it seems is the additional speaker that apparently cancels the effects of uneven microphone responses, and has tricky processing to drive it I'm sure.

Agreed!!

Although I prefered the smaller JR version. Was going to get a pair for myself before they stopped building them.

Haven't heard them but they look like 12k speakers to my pocket. Anyway, any more than 12K would be a waist on my engineers ears:)

I'm interested in what a $20k or $50k speaker would look like? Is it to do with the number of drivers, the height of the speakers, the room they're photographed in?

Cheers,

Craig.

Michael

Why do you class him as a non-hi-fi retailer ? Who do you class as hi-fi retailers ?

I can name at least 5 people who contribute to the audio industry who sell on TM some of who are on this forum.

Cheers

I haven't classed him as a non-hi-fi retailer.

Parmenter uses TM as a very cheap advertising venue. Many non-hi-fi retailers use TM as a very cheap advertising venue. Therefore Parmenter, like many non-hi-fi retailers, uses TM as a very cheap advertising venue.
