[NOOB] Tools needed to replace cartridge?

Recommended Posts

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this vinyl world and i've been wanting it since a kid as i'm really curious on how it works. I started hi-fi with 5.1 surrounds, to headphones, to earphones, and now vinyls.

I found this interesting as it needs more work rather than just getting plug 'n play stuff.

Anyway.. here goes..

Got this turntable for $30 from Laverton market, its a Technics SL-23 and everything is near mint except for some scratches on the dust cover. It had this stock cartridge EPS-271c, it was playing acceptably but then I took the stylus to check it and it was bent.

Now I want to replace it and seems like the Shure M97xE has a pretty good reputation and its not so expensive so that's my target cartridge. I'm also getting a Stanton H4-S headshell to complement this (I think it is compatible with the S-shaped tone arm of the Technics).

What else do I need to replace and adjust the new cartridge?

E.G. cables (i'm not sure if either the headshell or the cartridge will come with this), screwdriver, etc.

Help or assistance will be greatly appreciated!

My Best Regards,

Jo

You will need a small jeweler's or pocket screwdriver.

Download a free cartridge alignment protractor from here - http://www.vinylengine.com/cartridge-alignment-protractors.shtml

The user manual if you don't have it can be downloaded from here - http://www.vinylengine.com/library/technics/sl-23.shtml This is a free to register and download site.

A stylus overhang gauge would be handy, but not essential. http://www.needledoctor.com/Technics-Overhang-Gauge

Cheers,
