Max Christoffersen
Here's the simple story: I got burgled: thieves took my DVDs. Replacement titles are coming (from AMP) but 4 Zone 1 titles they can't replace, as they are not released here. So: I have free choice to choose 4 titles. But I can't find 4 films I want to own and watch over and over again. I've looked and looked and I don't see many keepers. I rent a lot, but increasingly I am getting *very* picky about films I want to see more than once. My small DVD collection is outweighed by live music - and I can name four concert titles easily - but the replacements *have* to be film. So after a decade and a half of being around film and going through the whole LaserDisc thing, I no longer crave ownership of film. I'm not a collector of film - I'm a viewer. I'm a renter not a buyer. And looking through the titles at my local video store and retail outlet, confirms the sad tale: I can't find four stories delivered in such a way that I want to marvel in their creativity for the rest of my life. DVD is dying for me as a 'keep and replay film many times' format. So give me a list - the four films that are on your 'must have' list - titles you want to see and enjoy over and over. GraemeWi
Agree with just about everything above...I find myself putting on a DVD to watch a particular scene rather then the whole movie. I think the gee-wizz effects are more of a drawcard then the plot. I've recently got the new Twister SE with the DTS soundtrack and watched it...awesome sounds and effects but the acting is so cringingly bad it puts me off! I've also got the new Mad Max 1 with the full rate DTS track, again it's a couple of scenes from that I enjoy. Movies that I will watch whole - Bullit is very good and I enjoy that quite a bit despite it being a lo-fi item. Thats one I can watch over and over. The Matrix is another favourite - lucky DVD's don't wear out. Shrek is another favourite. I'm looking forward to Donnie Darko (if it gets to retail in NZ) thats a very good movie that I'll get to watch. G
Tony Davey
Four movies that you dont have just to show off how good a system is, or how much bass your sub produces can be a difficult ask. I find myself a little more forgiving of the above type of movies, as they really do have their place in my collection. Con Air for example, whilst its not ever likely to win oscars, or, go down in history as a great cinematic experience, is nontheless an entertaining couple of hours which I have enjoyed a number of times. If I had to list 4 movies that I would replace "instantly" - Schindlers List Pulp Fiction Saving Private Ryan Platoon There are some others which would come close to the top of the list also (Star Wars Episodes 4, 5 6 The Godfathers, Casino, Goodfellas and ET). Sen and BTW Max, bummer to hear about the low-lifes who stole your movies. I have had that done to me, so I know how it is. It seems surprising that your insurance company wont allow you to obtain these 4 films from o/seas and simply reimburse you, even if they only paid you what they would have paid a shop in NZ, whats the difference where you get them? Guess thats one advantage to owning a CRT projector, unlikely some kid is gonna throw that in his bag to run down the street with it.
michaelw
Sorry to hear of your loss Max. Firing squad for the lowlifes ! You can't find four films that you want to own and watch over and over again ??? You haven't become that jaded have you ? That's so sad. Here's my 4 indispensible titles; all are old classics, absolutely NO modern SPX laden pieces of eye candy as IMO none of these will have any enduring qualities. 1. Citizen Kane 2. The Godfather 3. Metropolis (Fritz Lang's 1927 version) 4. Vertigo Honorable mention to: 1. Koyaanisqatsi 2. North By Northwest 3. The Seven Samurai 4. Truffaut's The 400 Blows All landmark films that have been hugely influential in establishing filmmaking as a true artform. Regards,
Bartman1553552672
What only 4...man thats a tough call. Pulp Fiction Aliens Terminator 2 Heat I have to admit the novelty of DVD purchasing has worn off so I'd keep these 4 only because they are good for demonstrating the HT gear to visitors. Geege
Its interesting your point. I sometimes feel that Im wasting my money purchasing DVDs as Im sure over long term, I will view them far fewer times than I would listen to a new album costing less money. Are you sure you cant slip a couple of music DVD past the insurance company?? What about TV series like Band of Brothers? Are they that picky? Is The Wall or Yellow Submarine classed as film or music? What about DVD-As? Anyway the list Star Wars IV <- a movie I watch every time its repeated on TV. Any 1 of 3 classic Arnie Movies (T1, T2, Predator) The Matrix and I was hoping I could add a thinking man's movie, that I could watch repeatedly. The closest I got was The Devils Advocate.
BigT[NZ]
i have only just got into buying dvd's but the movies that i find i can easily watch over and over again all seem to be independant/cult films like: Swingers Fear and loathing in las vegas Clerks Lock stock and 2 smoking barrels etc etc. for some reason i find big budget films (star wars, matrix, etc) hard to sit through after ive seen them once or twice

michaelw
Yup. My favorite film is in black & white, has mono sound and is full frame.
