EOI: JLTi-enhanced Oppo BDP-95AU Lvl 4.2 amazing sound

Recommended Posts

Item: JLTi-reengineered Oppo BDP-95AU (level 4.2)
Location: Sydney (Eastern suburbs)
Price: say $1200 or reasonable offer - sold in principle pending payment
Item Condition: Excellent
Reason for selling:
Getting an Oppo 105D upgraded to JLTi Level 4.2+ACB "Signature" - incredible sound but... ouch, I'm not earning right now
Payment Method: Pickup - Cash, Paypal, COD Only
Extra Info:

It's hard to imagine a universal digital audio player (let alone a video player) which sounds like this. There are $5,000+ CD-only players which do not sound as good.

This is not just an Oppo BD player with a few bolt-ons. It is an astonishing re-thinking and optimisation of each aspect of the player's performance with ultimate audio as the goal.

To get your own BDP-95 upgraded to this spec would cost $1990.

Here's a list of the mods (doesn't really tell the musical story though)

  1. Analog Clock Buffer (or Booster)

  2. The Terra Firma 'Heavy' Clocking

  3. SAW Oscillator/Clock

  4. Post-DAC Circuit - Diamond Transistor circuit

  5. Post-DAC Circuit - SuperReg two-stage Regulator

  6. New Post-DAC Filter

  7. Power Supply Noise Reduction

  8. Electronic "Flywheel" keeps the Delta-Sigma DAC stable down well below 1 Hz

  9. High Quality Silver-Clad Copper Wiring

Details of these mods can be found on the CustomAnalogueAudio web site

Additional improvements which Joe should have listed:

  • Transformers replaced by top quality (and expensive) German transformers
  • Balanced (XLR) and Unbalanced (RCA) audio output and performance is identical, unlike the original unit where XLR was inferior to RCA
  • Visibly improved video performance - GREAT video
  • Improved performance out of HDMI outputs
  • If digital is your only source, then you can use the JLTi BDP-95 as your preamp direct into your power amp

The BDP-95 is a "smart" device which takes music and video input direct from hard drives (up to 2TB), computers, and the web. It accepts CD, CD-R, CD-RW, SACD, DVD-A, DVD, and BluRay discs.

I've been using it as both my BluRay/DVD/hard disk input into my Marantz AV receiver (via HDMI) to my AV speaker system, while at the same time, it's connected via stereo RCA as my CD/SACD/DVD-A/hard disk input into my tube amp to my hi-fi speakers. Works a treat.

Plugging in a JLTi-reengineered player: on initially plugging power into the player, it takes half an hour for all the componentry to stabilise. Plug in the power cable and a bright blue LED at the rear switches on. Once all is ready to operate sublimely, the LED switches off and you are ready to go. Once it's stabilised, you can, of course, switch the unit off and on without any delay.

Serviced: Last checked and serviced by Custom Analogue Audio a few weeks ago - in great condition.

I have the 105 full modd.

1st question

Can the sound get any better from the 95 to 105

I have the 95 and 105 and did A/B test for a couple of hours.

I ripped 2 CDs and played them in both players at exactly the same time, kept selecting between the 2 and could not hear any difference at all.

I have kept the stock 95 for the kids, there is nothing that I can replace it with for the price.

2nd question

Why has no one purchased this?

Insert the USB dongle, download the oppo app, connect a hard drive and stream away.

I wish I needed this, what a bargain compared to $5k for the 105, which is amazing by the way.

Somethings you just don't sell unless you must, the 95 & 105 are keepers

Hi Chris.

The JLTi BDP-95 Lvl 4.2 sounds just the same as the BDP-105 Lvl 4.2

BUT, you can't add the ACB transformers into the BDP-95 - there isn't enough free space in the chassis. So the most you can upgrade it would be 4.2 "Signature" (no ACB). Joe has made just one of those AFAIK.

The JLTi BDP-105 Lvl 4.2 + ACB "Signature" sounds substantially better than the JLTi BDP-105 Lvl 4.2 (without ACB). I compared them at Joe's place. That was through his latest and greatest amp into his Elsinore speakers, so differences would not be masked at all (it is the most transparent system I have ever heard).

But this JLTi BDP-95 definitely sounds better than a stock UDP-205 and on a different planet compared to a stock Oppo BDP-95. Totally extraordinary for the money I'm asking.

Why hasn't it been snapped up??? No idea really. Just for CDs and SACDs alone I would take this any day over say a $3000 Marantz SACD player.

I probably should have added the test comparisons I did were on stock 95 & 105 oppos

It was late when I wrote that

I agree your JLTi 95 would be levels above any stock oppo.

Hold your ground in price, the going rate for a OPPO 105 is around $900.

For $300 more someone can own Hi-Fi

I don't think so. I don't recall ever getting a multi-region mod done on it. Considering that almost all the video I use it for is on hard-disk, multi-region is not relevant to me. And, of course SACD, CD and DVD-A (and music on hard-disk) are not region-limited.

Thanks. I watch quite lot of music DVD's and some of them are other regions. Good luck with the sale anyway. Cheers.

Here's a region free mod available on eBay for the BDP-95 for about $25 delivered. There may be even cheaper ones available.

I might be wrong, but I thought the 95 was region free for DVD, but had to be modded for Blu-Ray. Might be worth checking

there is a 'super disc' that you play once in an oppo and the dvd becomes region free.

Not blu-rays, just dvd's.

Costs nothing.

Thanks Benje.

I found it on the Oppo support site and downloaded oppo_superdisc.iso. I'll make it and run it on the 95 over the weekend.

Hi John.

Not exactly sale completed, but I've accepted an offer in principle, once my BDP-105D has been fully enhanced by Joe Rasmussen. That hasn't happened yet, only because Australia Post lost the 105D in Perth somewhere, 3 weeks ago, and only found it again last week! It's finally in Sydney now and "should" be delivered to his door on Monday.

Cheers

Warren

Price: $570 Item Condition: New Shipping Options: Pickup is available,Audition is not available, but in-person pickup can be arranged with limited personal contact Suburb or Town: Toowoomba State: Queensland Payment Method: EFT, Cash or Creditcard on Pickup Reason for selling: Super Isolation Buy! Further information: Mentor loudspeakers feature the same top-line wide-dispersion soft-dome tweeters and 6-inch drivers as Richter flagship Dragons, offering that extra room-filling ‘oomph’ from a bookshelf model. But the real secret is in the cabinets, whose crossover filter design and cabinet noise reduction techniques culminate in a big, natural dynamic sound.

The soft-dome neodymium tweeters provide wide dispersion, producing a lively and spacious sound stage with smooth musicality, and a response extending well beyond human hearing.
The highly efficient 6-inch mid/bass drivers harness composite cones combining the natural acoustic finesse of paper with the strength of modern carbon fibre technology. This produces ideal damping characteristics plus the coherence and timing essential to draw you into the music.
The awesome bass is rich, deep and firm.
New crossovers were painstakingly designed with feedback from a large team of audio specialists across Australia to produce emotional vocals, an astonishingly vivid sound stage and a smooth blending of frequencies. The highly stable off-axis response means the Legends maintain realism in a wide spectrum of listening environments – because everyone’s listening room is different.
The cabinets have been completely redesigned using non-parallel panels to reduce standing waves, and the comprehensive bracing is positioned to minimise harmonics. Double thickness rear and front baffles and new high density damping makes these the most neutral and musical cabinets we have ever produced.

Price: $1200 Item Condition: Both are excellent. At least 9/10 each. Shipping Options: Pickup is available,Audition is not available, but in-person pickup can be arranged with limited personal contact Suburb or Town: Sydney State: New South Wales Payment Method: Cash, Paypal Reason for selling: Looking to consolidate collection Further information: Hi there, I have on my hands an excellent pair of quality, audiophile headphones: the flagship Beyerdynamic model, the T1, and the PS500e from Grado Labs. Both have been lovingly cared-for by a genuine enthusiast.

The T1 is the first generation model. While the Gen 2 version has a detachable cable, I can hands-down say the Gen 1 sounds easily better, and has a genuine leather headband. This unit will come with the display metal case and a spare pair of pads - it's in terrific condition with no visual blemishes and the leather has softened beautifully with age. It's in flawless operating condition.

The PS500e is the 'Dark Horse' of the Grado line-up, and sits right in the sweet spot of their line-up. It's a metal/mahogany hybrid, and this version will ship with genuine Grado G-Cush upgrade pads which boosts its performance tremendously, IMHO it plays with the GS1000/2000 and PS1000. Please note that I don't have the original retail 'pizza box' packaging. It's in flawless aesthetic and operating condition.

I'm hoping to consolidate my collection some, and ideally trade with someone who's looking to swap a pair of headphones for these two units which will give them some variety and enjoyment between two very different philosophies and sound signatures. I'm interested in trading for a Sennheiser HD800s/HD820; MrSpeakers (now Dan Clark Audio) Ether C Flow 1.1 or Ether 2; Sony MDR-Z1R; or Focal Clear. If you have something else interesting, let me know.

A donation to Stereonet will be made upon a successful trade.
