I have built my home theatre to Sepmeyer ratios and according to RoomSim I should have nice clean bass. However it sounds worse than my old square room where the speakers and subs were placed in totally the wrong place !!

I have 4 subs and they do not have any punch like they used to, so I turned 3 of them off and the one remaining sub instantly sounded like it should.

So the only thing I can think is that my half height wall behind the seating is adversely affecting the acoustics. The wall is just slightly higher and wider than the seats by about 50-100mm. However it also has two other nibs that are supporting a bench top so that it accommodates bar seating.  anybody have any thoughts ?

Here is a quick drawing of my layout :

                        HALF HEIGHT WALL (1100MM HIGH)

I haven't drawn them but the subs are roughly in each corner.

Any thoughts ?

So to be clear, there's a bench on top of the nib walls arrangement? In effect creating an open backwards-facing box behind the listening position?

Hello Ken, are you using equalization based on in-room measurements?

No - just Audyssey set up.

What happens with two subs? (I'm wondering about null points but have nil expertise here)

It seems to better with just 2 subs and even better again with just 1 sub - the exact opposite of what is supposed to be and opposite to REW RoomSim calculations. In RoomSim it shows completely flat bass up to 60hz but a bit jaagged after that with 4 subs. That's what made me think this wall might be adversely affecting things.

The wall does not affect the bass.    Your problem is something else.

If one sub sounds good... and more don't, then it is almost certainly the multiple woofers not summing together properly (ie. producing peaks and dips)

The placement and EQ of each subwoofer is important to getting it to sum correctly with the other subwoofers.

So you mean "yes" then.    Audyssey takes in room measurements and applies EQ to the woofers to attempt to make the response flat.

Feedback from many, many people on AVS is that bars like that end up never being used, expect for say grand final day. No one wants to sit on a stool for an entire film.

.....I'd build a riser and wack more seats in, you've masses of space and you can turn the riser into a bass trap.
