MARANTZ SR9600 - Advice

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have a Marantz SR9600 receiver I purchased quite a few years back.  It was second hand when I purchased it, but lately it's been sitting in my garage doing nothing for the past year.

It doesn't fit in to my current TV cabinet, and I am quite happy with the Denon AV receiver I have now......also no 4k support, so I have come to the decision I should probably sell it.

I know this unit was the "ducks nuts" in it's day and was worth quite a bit, and I also paid a small fortune for it years ago second hand.....I have no idea what it would be worth in today's market considering new formats and 4k.

I would be grateful for some advise on a sell price today......or would it be just worth keeping as a "back up".....or rather large bedroom amp! With its 25kg weight, it'd make a great boat anchor!! Lol 🙂

Thanks

Trade it in on something new you need mate.

Otherwise, put it on here for a couple of hundred bucks. IMO all its worth.

Where I use to work, we would trade in old A/V receivers all the time and couldnt sell them.

They were a pain in the ass. We always wrote back the sale.

Thanks for the reply......yeh, that's pretty much what I thought.

Reckon i'll hang on it it, it has a sweet sound so probably just use it as a Stereo amp in the bedroom 🙂

Cheers

Why does 4K matter?

No need to pass video through AVR's these days as most players (hopefully yours too) have dual HDMI outputs.

As I recall the 9600 was the top of the range Marantz receiver, might have been in the days prior to HDMI.  A quick google reveals they were around $8000 back in 2006 so pretty big money.  Marantz put alot of effort into making it work both as HT and in two channel at which it apparently excelled.

I'm wouldn't be worried about the 4k either.....just thought it may devalue it as a second hand unit.

gat474 - oh yeh, they were worth a tonne of money, and even as a stereo unit sounds beautiful.....it's just too big from my cabinet 😞

It has 2 1080p HDMI inputs witch is enough for me.....it would be a regretful sale I can assure u.  I hate seeing it sitting there doing nothing. Lol

I had a Marantz SR9600. I also had a Marantz MM7055 5-channel power amp, which was very good. The SR9600 was definitely better. Two more channels of course, but simply better sound. The SR9600 is top notch. When the internal lights on my unit failed I simply used the seven-channel analog in to use it as a power amp.  The posters above are correct: home theatre gear devaluates much more quickly than stereo gear, because new features are always being added, and no-one wants to buy an outdated mid-range AVR. But good amplification is always good amplification, and this unit could be more attractive to someone who just wants that.
